Stupid Question

Dearest flist, I am a complete failure as a human being and have never read/seen Lord of the Rings.  However, I find myself currently unable to not reference it in my book.  My question to you is, is it true that one does not just walk into Mordor?  And hat would walking into Mordor entail?  Would be anything like The Inferno?  And yes, that last part was actually a serious question.  Laugh all you want, but pop culture references are made of win and I want to get them right.
