54,000 fabulous folk taking part in a half marathon, from Newcastle to South Shields, in a great personal achievement, and raising an incredible amount of money for charity. Last year I was one of the masses, and I spent all day wishing I was with them. Next year, we're doing it again :Op
The Red Arrows started the race, and performed numerous fly-passes, and displays, throughout the day. The first picture shows what we could see of them starting the race, with the blue and red smoke visible in the corner of the frame. They usually use the red, white, and blue smoke for the Tyne Bridge iconic race photo [picture2], but this year only white smoke with one stream of red was used [picture3] in a tribute to Flt Lt Jon Egging, who was killed during an Air Show crash in August.
Blind runner, and Elite men:
The blind runners are so inspirational.
Martin Mathathi, who is not in this picture, broke the men's record for the course.
High five:
The community spirit of the whole thing makes me proud to be a Geordie. We had two thundery downpours during this years event, and everyone just stayed put to cheer the participants on. People were giving out oranges, water, jelly babies, etc...as well as filling up charity buckets.
Clanger:
I don't know how people can do it in huge costumes. The temperature must get unbearable. Other bizarre runners we seen, besides all the weird and wonderful costumes - two men with fridges on their backs, a guy running barefoot, and plenty of firemen / military with full gear on. Bless them all.
Spoons:
This old fella is a legend. He stops at every band along the route with his spoons, and has a little jam and dance session.
