Doctor Who: Gridlock

Apr 18, 2007 14:28

As you may know, I'm working my way through Doctor Who, and I'm near the end of season 4 (the first season of the second Doctor). Meanwhile, I also watch the new episodes. So I was just watching the latest Doctor Who episode (season 29, episode 3) "Gridlock." Boy was I surprised to see the return of a monster from a lost fourth season episode! I feel a bit better about sitting through the reconstruction now.

If you don't know, many episodes from the first two Doctors have been lost. All that remains are the soundtracks (recorded by fans from the original broadcasts), still photos from the production, and occasional clips (often from censor boards, so most death scenes are intact). Fan groups have reconstructed the episodes, using still photos, subtitles, and occasionally narration, along with the soundtracks and surviving clips. Some of them are painful to watch, but most aren't that bad--you can get into them much like watching a foreign film with subtitles.
