War has been spreading rapidly across the nation of Baroque. An aristocratic group known as Karada, supporters of the movement lead to usurp the throne of the current king, has come across a surprisingly large snare in their plans-a group of the plain, simple common folk known as Shinzou. This collaboration of commoners wishes solely for one thing: to keep the king that has been kind to them, allowing them many freedoms despite their class. Members of Karada, however, wish for three outrageous things: unlimited wealth, unlimited power, and the ability to keep their enemies restrained to their appropriate social classes.
Up until recently, relations in the port city of Grand Cross had always been a little tense, even on the best of days, but now, as members of both Karada and Shinzou move into town and lay claim to portions of the territory, the subtle animosity festering between silent supporters of both sides has become blown out of proportion, almost ridiculously so. Brawls in the middle of the street, petty arguments over coffee evolving into a life or death matter, desecration of places with any sort of meaning-just a few of the events that are commonplace in Grand Cross.
Yet even so, there are always citizens that remain neutral and cater to both sides. These people belong to the group known as Iki, the very spirit of the city at war. These are the merchants, the performers, the business owners, and the doctors who simply cannot afford to pick and choose their customers, especially with the constantly fluctuating demand for their services. Of course, many members of Iki are simply civilians that wandered into this technologically archaic country for reasons of their own and decided to stay simply because it was a breath of fresh air from whatever situation from which they were straying.
It is a city of war, and a city of rumors. They say that the Karada’s infamous leader has set foot through one of the city’s three gates and taken residence somewhere within its borders. Fewer still know of the brilliant countermove: they say the king himself, touched by the fierce loyalty of his people, has quietly assumed leadership of the Shinzou. Both sides have begun recruiting people with strange, often unique abilities in an attempt to win the war. Magic, genius, alchemy, fighting skills, artes, Innocence-anything goes, and the war could be won by any side.
After all, there is never a dull moment in Grand Cross, the city that never sleeps.
