A.N. This is sort of a introspective, I hope you like it as Mr. Gold wouldn't leave me alone until I wrote this. Weirdly I wrote something before last week's episode that turned out to be canon :)

Everything came at a price, Rumpelstiltskin learned that a long time ago. Before he had gained power as the Dark One, he had been considered a coward by everyone even his wife, Milah. He had run during the Ogre Wars getting injured in the process. Rumpelstiltskin, however, was kind man who loved his son, Baelfire very much but everything changed with one magical dagger. If he had know what would happen with such a weapon Rumpelstiltskin would have never listened to the mysterious old man. But he would have done anything to save his son from going into the same wars that had branded him a coward. He just didn't realize that the course that the mysterious man had set him one would change Rumpelstiltskin's entire life.

The day he went to steal the magical dagger would change everything. In order to save his son's life, he was given a choice; kill the Dark One with his own blade or run away like that coward he was. So when he went to steal it from the Duke's home, Rumpelstiltskin never knew the true reason for the mysterious man's helpfulness. It had turned out that he was the Dark One. Tired of living a life of evil, he had arraigned his own death and Rumpelstiltskin in fit of rage killed him. After that the coward had received the greatest power in Fairytale land.

At first he tried to do only good with his magic, like ending the Ogre Wars so that Baelfire and other children wouldn't have to fight anymore. But then, he start using it for petty things and soon the evil took over and Rumpelstiltskin's son began to look at him like he was a stranger. Baelfire had seen the man who was loving and kind began to become cruel. His father had changed and he could hardly see the man who raise him in the man known as the Dark One anymore.

It was only when people began disappearing left and right that Baelfire confronted his father. He wanted Rumpelstiltskin to renounce his powers and be the man he once was. Baelfire hadn't known, however, that when he had made a deal with the Blue Fairy. With her magic, they could go to a land without magic. Somewhere that Baelfire could have his father back and the powers of the Dark One would be gone forever. He just wanted his old life back.

Baelfire could have never known that trying to help own father turn from dark magic would led him to his own destiny. At first Rumpelstiltskin agreed to go to this new world but still the thirst for power had corrupted him and in the process he had lost his son. He had also broken the only deal he had ever really cared about. After that Rumpelstiltskin began to do his research into this land without magic. For years he looked for ways to get there but he never found one.

Until he found the most intriguing curse but the only one who could use it was Regina. For the spell needed someone of nobility seeking revenge. Once he planted the seeds of the curse whereabouts in the Evil Queen's mind all Rumpelstiltskin had to do was still back and watch. He knew how much she hated Snow White and that was all that was needed for the spell to work So when the curse began to spread through out the kingdom, Rumpelstiltskin smiled for the first time since Baelfire's disappearance.

He would finally be able to find his son. He didn't care about the cost so when Storybrooke was brought into existence, Rumpelstiltskin bided him time under the name Mr. Gold. He was one of the only two people who knew who they truly were after the curse and use it to his advantage. He still made deals knowing that one day they would come in handy. Years passed and yet he knew there was no leaving Storybrooke. While it had been his idea, he hadn't know the one of the prices that came with the curse was that no one could leave town. Meaning that he was stuck there with no way of finding his son.

But he also knew of the prophecy. That Snow White and Prince Charming's daughter would be their savior. So when Henry wanted to find his mother, Mr. Gold did his research. When he had read that she had been found alone in the woods, he began to suspect that this Emma Swan was the royal couple's child. If he was right then the curse would end and he would be able to find his son. Since Henry was the only one who could leave town, Rumpelstiltskin sent him on a mission to go find her.

While he was gone, Mr. Gold waited. He had hoped that he was right. That Henry's mother was who he was looking for. Without her he would never be able to find his beloved son. He was stuck in Storybrooke; the price he had for betraying his son. For the magic he had inherited was no comfort to him. Especially when it cost him two people he loved. When he found Baelfire, he would do the one thing he failed to do the first time when he was offered the choice of living without magic. Instead of acting like a coward, he would renounce the powers of the Dark One forever.

He would do anything to get the son, he loved some much back. So Mr. Gold continued plot, schemed and wheel deals that would help him further his cause. Until one day, Henry arrived back in Storybrooke with his mother. And once the clock hands moved, Rumpelstiltskin knew that he was right. This was the woman who would help him find his son. So he made sure to strike a deal with her. For he always made sure his costumers paid him back in some way or another.

Emma was one person, Rumpelstiltskin would make sure lived up to her bargain. Especially now that she had proven him right. She had been the hero everyone had been looking for. The curse had been broken and yet no one could leave Storybrooke or else they wouldn't remember Fairytale Land and who they were there. So he came up with another plan, Emma would help him when it came to helping Baelfire back to Storybrooke. If only he knew where to start. Thankfully he still had a piece of his son's hair.

As he began the location spell, Mr. Gold promised he would become a man worth of Baelfire. He would no longer be the coward that had started his journey that led to evil. Rumpelstiltskin would finally make the choice he had squelched on so many years before. Once he found where Baelfire was, he would take that step over Storybrooke's county-line. The spell he had discovered would help him retain his memory. He just hoped that this time, magic wouldn't come at a higher price.
