10:15 PM 11/13/07 · Does it strike anybody else as weird that Clark can't fly? Well, not so much can't as thinks he can't. It's clearly entirely mental because we've seen him do it a number of times when he wasn't exactly in his right mind.
- There have been a couple times, first season, where he was sleeping in his room and left the window open. While dreaming he just sorta floated out the window and would wake up miles away from the farm.
- When his mind was briefly re·programmed by Jor·El he took off from the farm, intercepted Lex's jet, tore his way in and retrieved a Kryptonian artifact.
Okay, I can really only remember those two times but there's probably a couple others I'm just not remembering; that one time he went after that missle launch I think that was more a jump than flying. The point is he can fly but for whatever reason he doesn't realize it.
I suspect his strong desire to be as human as possible is holding him back. As though flying would finally confirm for him, in a way he could completely not deny, just how different he is. Still, it's gotta be aggravating as all get out that everybody else from Krypton that pops up on Earth just fly all over the place.
Not terribly surprising when you consider the source material. While originally there was no Superboy, the concept for a young man of steel didn't develop until years after Superman was an established character, the actual Man of Steel didn't fly initially. There's a reason that whole bit on can leap tall building in a single bound is so ingrained into the literature...
...he used to only jump!
My current theory is that Clark will not fly until the very last episode of Smallville, possibly not until the very last part of whatever episode that is. I kinda doubt there will be a cape and costume, least I'm hoping there won't be, but I'd be very surprised if it happened anytime before that.
He flies, fades to black & end credits, and the series ends.
Course, that's just me.
When do you think Clark will fly?
