When Damon returns, Vicki is long gone, Pearl and Anna are still hangin' on to Mystic Falls, and Stefan is a vamp roaming around under daddy dearest's nose. It's STEFAN that turns Damon (or Pearl? YOU COULD GO EITHER WAY AND I'D BE HAPPY) and then goes on a life-long quest to reunite with his dearly beloved Vicki, leaving Damon on his own (to have his plotline as before, being trained by lady-vampires because WHO DIDN'T LOVE THAT?) ((which is why Damon didn't recognize Vicki as his brother's sire #logic))
Elena meets Damon the night of the bonfire, after breaking up with Matt, but instead of him compelling her to forget, she calls her parents to send them home and she's out getting coffee with Damon when her parents die. ALTERNATIVELY: SHE GETS IN THE CAR WITH HER PARENTS AND IS *AWARE* THAT DAMON SAVED HER FROM THE RIVER. (idk - you choose)
Elena starts school with her new bf Damon - who has come clean about the whole vampire thing since (a) he rescued her from the river or (b) there's a menace in town that turned Caroline and he's the one that figures it out / trains her to be a baby!vampire
Caroline and Bonnie are SUPER gay and Tyler/Matt are EQUALLY SUPER GAY. Caroline helps Tyler out with his whole 'I'm a werewolf thing' in a purely platonic way and they are super good friends, Care never dates Matt and so that fiasco never happens.
Jeremy doesn't have to deal with the dramatic death of Vicki, but no one has really told him about the supernatural - so he starts doing some digging (things are always floating near Bonnie and like, fuck it I'm doing research at the library to figure this shit out) and finds Anna in the library b/c WHO DIDN'T LOVE THAT BEGINNING, I'M KEEPING IT.
Jenna knew about the supernatural right away because Elena's like "sweetie, if I'm gonna date a vampire, my auntie is gonna have to be chill about it" and the fact that she's dating Alaric makes everything that much smoother.
OBVIOUSLY THIS MEANS THAT KELLY IS PART OF THE DOPPLEGANGER LINE AND NOT ISOBEL, but let's face it: Isobel has to still exist. But she's just a runaway bisexual piece of human ridiculousness, who pops in from time to time to tease Alaric, make Jenna's life more confusing, and toss riddles over her shoulder at Elena for no reason whatsoever. Sometimes there are montages of her teaching university classes and everyone staring at her cleavage.
THIS MEANS: Bonnie's mom is alive and well, Bonnie was raised knowing that she was a witch rather than it getting sprung on her FOR NO REASON, she has her mom and grams teaching her the whole time and she's stronger and less traumatized for it. Also - Bonnie doesn't have to sacrifice her whole life for Elena's all the time. WIN-WIN. This also means that once Caroline turns into a vampire, Bonnie is upset but also pretty chill and there's relatively no hostility. Although their sex life is adjusted accordingly.
THIS ALSO MEANS: that Stefan and Vicki have been the ones tripping up Klaus this whole time, instead of it just being invisible-Katherine, which leads to more hilariousness on the Originals side of things, because Stefan and Klaus will never not love to troll each other, regardless of the universe we are dealing with.
Kelly isn't turned into a vampire because she's a drunk, not a history buff obsessed with the occult, and so there is never a grand suicide in a graveyard. why? no need? vamp!Vicki thinks she's super cute and sometimes they get drunk together and seduce poor, innocent victims and dance on tables and stuff.
Damon and Alaric are old softies and so once they are happily established with Elena and Jenna (respectively) they get the kids to help them pull a Parent Trap on John & Isobel and everyone is invited to the wedding.
Except Klaus. He's not invited to the wedding and that makes him super, duper sad and so he shows up with a living heart in his hand and blood on his face and Rebekah just smirks at him from the line of bridesmaids and Elijah hands Damon a twenty.
Meanwhile, Anna is super upfront with Jeremy about the whole 'I need to get my mom out of the tomb thing' (since he's super into bloodplay and all - why hide shit?) and so the whole gang helps her free Pearl and Alaric/Jenna become parents to the tomb-vamps, teaching them how to use cell phones and youtube and assimilate into life again.
((in a world where this is true, let it be known, that I'm the first person that starts writing ridiculous alaric/jenna/pearl ot3 fic that is mostly them eye-rolling at incompetent vampires and drinking tea saucily))
