each and every january there is a two week stretch where the rain comes to a halt and the temperatures spike into the 70s and sometimes even into the 80s. we call it the january mini-summer. and it is a complete secret. carmel river beach is totally empty on one of the warmest days of the year. the ground will start to sing. there is almost no swell, as if the surface of the sea is oppressed somehow by the solar spirit. no out-of-towners, no beach combers, just quiet sand songs and brilliant light. and an almost overlooked warmth.
