John Banville - The Sea
Paulo Coelho - The Alchemist
--
both exceptionally good books (for different reasons), but the reason I mention them is one contains a very fitting depiction of my view of god and the other says the only religious thing that has ever made me think 'now that makes sense':
---
John Banville - The Sea
page 185
"...I do not entertain the possibility of an afterlife, or any deity capable of offering it. Given the world that he created, it would be an impiety against God to believe in him..."
Paulo Coelho - The Alchemist
page 128
"...The wise men understood that this natural world is only an image and a copy of paradise. The existence of this world is simply a guarantee that there exists a world that is perfect. God created the world so that, through its visible objects, men could understand his spiritual teachings and the marvels of his wisdom..."
---
I like Paulo's passage, but only when viewed in context with how little I like other passages of same tone. John's I like, in Mr Banville's I can identify with my own view.
2 very good books. highly recommended.
