“Elizabeth.”
She recognizes that voice immediately, it’s one that makes her heart leap but also one that makes her feel nervous, she‘s never sure how to act around him anymore. Turning around she smiles at the tall gangly red-head.
“Hey…Conan,” she almost leans forward to play punch him on the shoulder but she thinks twice about that.
That’s not what her and Conan do.
“I see the hair is as…hair like as always,” she winces as she hears the words coming from her mouth.
Blerg, why does she always lose her ability to talk around him? It was like she was talking to a celebrity or something. Well…she was.
As long as I don’t mention the wife…she thought to herself.
She has a bad habit of bringing up the person who had driven them apart all those years ago.
“How are your kids?”
Yeah, so her word vomit didn’t seem to be ending anytime soon. Why wasn’t he saying anything? He had been the one to start this conversation. Liz tried to avoid starting conversations with Conan when he was around, although she was kind of disappointed that he was leaving for Los Angeles in the not-so-distant future.
“I heard a rumour,” he states, seeming to not hear a word she’s said.
“I hear lots of rumours,” Liz looks around to see if there’s anyone to rescue her from the awkward conversation, because Conan is usually the one who ends things.
He always had been.
When he doesn‘t say anything she continues.
“The other day, I heard a rumour that Jenna tried to throw her underwear at the Rockefeller tree as a dare, but that it ended up on the ground in the hands of some homeless guy, and that he sold it on eBay and now he’s really rich because some pervert in Canada bought…”
She trails off. Conan doesn’t care. And how do homeless people even have access to eBay? She made a mental note to ask Jack later, he always had the answer to those things.
“It’s about Jack,” Conan smiles slightly and it worries her.
“Donaghy? No he didn’t put Geiss in the coma on purpose, actually that was kind of my fault…”
“I heard you’re dating…” he cuts her off.
Her word vomit disappears, and suddenly she can’t find any words at all. It’s either one or the other with Conan. Not that this really has anything to do with him…Jack? Really? She wondered who started that rumour, maybe it was Tracy.
“Is that true?” he asks, quieter now, and she realises she forgot to respond.
“No. Blerg. What? Where did you hear that?” now she’s just confused.
“Well actually from Jack - and I guess I twisted his words. I overheard him telling Jonathan he was ‘in love with Liz Lemon’…I assume that would be you.”
Liz isn’t sure if her jaw is capable of hitting the ground, but if it wasn’t seemingly glued shut she’s sure it would be on the ground. It takes her a few moments before she responds.
“He probably meant Liz Lemler in accounting…it’s happened before. And why were you in Jack’s office?”
“He’s my boss too, Liz, but from what I hear on the rumour mill it’s you who’s usually up there…I just put two and two together…”
“Well, you’re wrong, and I have to go,” Liz turned around and headed into the nearest room, shutting the door behind her.
Jack? Really?
She sunk down into what she now realised was Tracy’s couch and stared blankly at the flat screen TV in front of her. For once she’s walked away from a conversation with Conan without thinking about him at all, all she can think of is Jack, and why he would say that.
Maybe it was a joke.
It had to be a joke.
Or he really was in love with Liz Lemler.
Just then the door swung open to reveal Tracy. “Hey Liz Lemon, Conan said I would find you here, we need help catching my pet frog!”
“Pet frog?” she’s almost afraid to ask.
“He’s very intelligent!”
Tracy turns around and runs back out of the room in search of his frog. Liz sighs. She’s going to have to deal with Jack later, right now Tracy and his frog will serve as a good distraction.
