A co-worker recently turned me onto The Golden Compass, which is actually the first book in a series called His Dark Materials. I just finished the series (book three, "The Amber Spyglass") last night. Overall, it's a really, really great story and has some truly fascinating ideas about theology and reality. There are some well developed and great characters, and oh... the writing is enchanting- it hardly feels like you're reading, it simply pulls you in. I do have some issues with the third book, I don't think some things were fleshed out well enough or given enough time to Come Into Being, but it's still a fantastic series. :D Highly recommended.
