Firefighter's chopped pinky to become fundraiser

INUVIK - Inuvik's Fire department wants to show its gratitude to a volunteer firefighter who helped put out a fire at the community's high school on Monday.
The firefighter lost half his pinky finger while fighting the fire, and the fire department plans to pickle it.

It isn't the first time Duane Debastien has lost a finger. When he was fire chief in Fort McPherson a fan blade lopped off his right index finger.

The doctors stitched that one back on but Monday was a different story. As a man-lift hoisted him to the top of the school's outside wall his finger got stuck between the man-lift's basket and the wall.

The tip of his pinky finger fell to the ground.

It didn't bother Debastien though.

"I was willing to come back to the fire right after getting my finger chopped off," he said "My fire department is in my blood, and its going to be there for ever."

Al German is Inuvik's fire chief Al German says says the finger will be kept in the fire hall's display case.

He's hoping the finger will do more than just look pretty.

"We're giving Dawson City's a run for their money." he joked. "They've got the sour toe shooter - we've got the sweet finger shooter. we'll do a fundraiser and try and raise money."

German says the money will go towards buying a new safer man-lift.
