Almost done with my first year of college. Wow.
The UC system is pretty fast paced: three quarters in a year, each 10 weeks of class + one more week for finals. I'm now at my last week of classes, and then it's finals week! Then moving out of the first-year dorms and back home for a week until I move into VDC Norte (that's how it's looking right now, because I can't find anyone who wants to live in VDCN for the summer, a-ahah ;;). So far, it looks like I won't be doing summer classes, but job hunting so I can afford rent.
I've been wondering about the rest of college these days, and it feels like I have to hurry up and decide on what to do. =___=;;;
I'm pretty set on being an East Asian Cultures major, with a minor in Digital Arts.
But here's the thing: If I do just these two, then I can graduate in two more years, provided I get all the classes I need and I do summer school to make up for the GEs/Humanities Core alternative course requirements. I have two GEs (3 if you count upper-div writing, but I think that's done with a course that's part of your major? I'll have to check for sure -o-;a) and two Hum Core alt. left, and if I do them over summer, I can probably fit everything I need and graduate at the end of my third year. I kind of want to graduate early because it'll save a lot of money (especially after the 32% fee increases), but this plan is kind of shaky. What if I don't get all the classes I need? What if summer classes end up being more expensive than a fourth year of school, considering how expensive summer sessions can go?
Also, I kind of do want to stay for a fourth year, partly because I want to continue learning German (if I take the three-year plan, I'll have to give up learning German), and partly because I'm somewhat considering a second minor in Informatics (mostly human-computer user interfaces, software stuff) because you can't be an Asian without doing something science-y lawl. But if I add an Informatics minor to the EAC major and Digital Arts minor, I'll have to do five or so more courses over the summer to graduate by the end of my fourth year. And this is all assuming I take 18-20 units per quarter. I could petition to take more than 20 units per quarter, but I'm not all that studious so I don't know if I could keep my grades up. It seems kind of like a long stretch, but I want to keep my GPA up so I at least have the grades to apply for grad school. I could TA and work on the side to pay for grad school, and apply for a bajillion scholarships and home I get at least one. (Think positive, Grace! >__<)
And I kind of want to stay a fourth year without the Informatics minor and just take it easy in my last year and pick up some languages. I love learning languages, but unless you're majoring in them, they don't really count for much... I'm already being super lazy by taking German as an elective this year instead of doing courses that count towards a major or GEs. I feel kind of bad for taking an optional year-long course instead of being "efficient" and doing stuff that gets rid of GEs/Hum Core alt requirements. (b-but it's okay, on'y two or so more GEs to go, right? ;o;)
aaaaaaah, why must schooling be so expensive /cry
also, what, I lost my ride to AX. A-anyone know anyone looking for someone to split hotel costs with, or anyone in the Brea/Fullerton/Irvine area who's commuting? orz
