Should've thought of that eight months ago...

Here's something funny.....

Eight months ago my mother was involved in a car accident while she was driving the school bus (she's a school bus driver). It was on a narrow street, and involved another car that tried to squeeze between her bus & some parked cars. The driver of the other car was a teenage girl. Anyhow, my mother reported the accident to the proper authorities, and her employer dealt with her accordingly. This was eight months ago.

Just last week, my mother receives a letter from the insurance company stating that she is being held 50% responsible for the accident. Turns out that the young girl finally made a claim to the insurance company after all this time. My mother acknowledges that she is partly responsible, but is obviously not too happy that her driver's license fee will now be costing her quite a bit to renew. But that's not the funny part ---- the funny part is that this teenage girls mother is up in arms that the accident is being viewed as 50/50. I guess this woman doesn't think her daughter would EVER lie to her about damaging her car (who *hasn't* changed the facts of how something really happened in order to make yourself sound less guilty?). So, this woman has been phoning my mother's work demanding to speak with her --- she's even gone so far as to start telling her boss that they need to do something about my mother "...because she's a liar!" Keep in mind that after the accident, my mother had to go through a re-evaluation & assessment at work, something they do whenever a driver is involved in an accident.

What I find funny is that this woman, the mother of the teenage girl who was driving the car, is calling my mother a liar. This woman was not present at the time of the accident! She doesn't know what happened except for what her daughter is telling her ---- and why would she wait EIGHT MONTHS to report the accident??? She's pissed that she has to pay her own deductible, and I think it serves her right if she waits this long to make the claim. Obviously the damage wasn't bad enough if you waited this long. And when people wait so long, I immediately get suspicious that the only reason they are making a claim *now* is because they damaged their car elsewhere and are looking for a way to get out of paying for the damages.

I told my mother to report her to the authorities if she keeps calling her work --- especially when this woman starts saying bad things about her, trying to get her fired from her job. She has no right to be calling her workplace, and certainly no right to speak to my mother considering she has nothing to do with the accident.

Personally, I think giving people up to a year to make a claim on an accident is absolutely ridiculous. If a person makes a claim, the other party involved should be given no more than TWO WEEKS to make their claim ---- and if they don't, their inaction should be interpreted as them taking 100% responsibility for the accident. I think that's pretty fair!
