Today was my first day of practicum. I can't even begin to explain how nervous I was when I got there this morning. All I kept thinking about was what do they expect of me? What if I don't perform to their standards? I got a quick (and I mean quick) tour of the place before being handed over to someone else. I was given a mindless task before finally being handed over to someone in processing who basically sat me in front of the computer and let me do some hands-on work (yay for MARC records!) Anyhoo...according to the schedule that I got a brief peek at, I'm slated to work cataloguing for the first three days, then moving on to the reference desk. Next week consists of acquisitions, periodicals, and circulation. I'm pretty sure they'll have me do some shelving sometime as well.
I know today was overwhelming (it felt like a 16-hour shift as opposed to the 8-hour shift that I worked)...but I should start feeling more comfortable by tomorrow. I appreciate the fact that they are slating time for me in each department. That gives me the experience that I need. And everyone has been very warm and welcoming. I was even included in a Timmy's run that one of the guys did today (yes, there is a Timmy's just down the street. Sweet!)
However, I am really, REALLY tired today. I went tobagganing on Sunday, and that pooped me out to the point where I fell asleep at Mike's place while we were watching a movie --- and it took some prodding from him before I finally woke up (at least I didn't drool on his shirt!). It also doesn't help that he's so darn comfortable to curl up next to.
I think it's time to do a bit of reading and that hit the bed early. Need all my senses about me for tomorrow!
