Dear Readers,
Here's my holiday message to you.
George Bush says he has a log in his eye. That must be why he cannot see the damage he is doing to millions of law-abiding, taxpaying, voting American citizens who happen to be gay or lesbian when he says that he will support a constitutional amendment to prevent us from having the same basic rights that the nongay citizens of this country have.
In his disturbingly shallow responses to Diane Sawyer's questions in the ABC interview aired on December 16, Bush invoked the biblical passage that goes, "Why would I take a speck out of your eye when I have a log in my own?" (or something like that). When asked, "Are gays sinners?" he answered, "We're all sinners," thus implying that, since he has that log stuffed in his own eye, he should not make an effort to get at the speck he sees in your queer eye (or something like that).
Since it is the business of this column to be helpful to gay and lesbian people in their pursuit of fulfilling, loving relationships, it is my duty to warn readers that there is something brewing out there that could be a tsunami of a threat to our relationships. As increasing numbers of gay and lesbian people settle down to build loving partnerships and solid family lives, the "leader of our country" is saying that we do not have the same right to sanctify these relationships, or to gain from them the same benefits that our fellow citizens have. Not only that, but he also supports making that restriction official, a matter of constitutional law.
WOW!
Can we do anything about this? Yes.
First, do not internalize the toxic message that George Bush is sending. Our loving relationships, our families and our lives are just as legitimate, honorable and real as those of the nongay citizens of this country. Don't for one minute think otherwise.
Second, from a practical point of view, we can use our voting power in 2004 to insure that George Bush does not get a second swing at smacking the good gay citizens of this country from the powerful bully pulpit the presidency provides. Do not vote for a person who thinks it is OK to legally modify the United States Constitution in order to codify discrimination against millions of gay and lesbian citizens.
The time has come for this fight.
Here's what you can do: Pay attention. Stay informed. Keep a wary eye on this administration. Care about what is happening. Speak up when your rights are being deliberated. It is your life on the line here. It's our lives.
Happy Holidays!
Now, we all know that Bush is an asshle and an idiot, but he's pushing his Christian values too much. I'm not saying I'm not Christian, I just think that, as president, he has a position of ambiguity to uphold. Complain all you can, while we still can.
