Writers Strike and SPN

Nov 14, 2007 08:38

First, let me say that I whole heartedly support the writers and this strike. They are the ones who give us those lines we like so well and help the creator’s dream come alive. Yes we have the actors, but let’s face it, a show is only as good as its writing. You can have the best actors in the world and if the writing sucks, so will the show.

And now the strike is hitting my favourite show.

Sad news for Supernatural fans...

CW Source: How is the writers’ strike going to affect you guys?
Sera Gamble: We have a couple of episodes that we were really pounding on to finish, and after that, we’re out of material to shoot. That goes not just for us, it goes for every television show.

CW: I was wondering, especially for someone like you who is both a producer and a writer, can you get around the strike by writing as a producer, or does it not work that way? For that matter, is that something you’d even want to do?
SG: No, you can’t get around it, and I can’t speak for anyone but myself, but I don’t necessarily want to get around it. I care about my TV show, I care about my job, I care about honoring contracts that I personally have signed with my studio and the work I have promised to do for my bosses, but now that we’re in strikeland, I hope that we just strike effectively and we come to a speedy resolution. I know that from the point of view of fans who read your blog, they’re thinking, “How can they do it so they can keep making the show that we love?” I hope that you tell them all that we all want to keep making the show that they love, and in order to do that, we have to get through the strike, and we hope that the studios will cooperate and everyone will come to a resolution.

CW: How many episodes do you have written?
SG: I just did a bunch of rewriting on episode 11, and I believe they are close to or at production draft for episode 12. Episode 13, I don’t think it’s going to be finished by the time we have to walk off the job.

Now, since they own the show, are they able to hold out longer than say Heros who has 3 more episodes left, or they just better prepared? Anyone know?

In the meantime, we have at least 5 more episodes (including tomorrow nights), and spoilers!

Episode 11 Spoilers:
Agent Henriksen from the FBI descends on small town Monument, Colorado and captures Sam and Dean. He takes over the police station, even letting the one prisoner go, warning the Sheriff that they are the most dangerous criminals he will have ever met. He has his man lead them shackled into the station and the holding cell, leaving them shackled together. When demons attack the police station, killing the Henriksen's partner and several policemen, he blames Sam and Dean, believing they have friends coming to get them out. They try to tell him it's demons and everyone is in danger but he refuses to listen. Ruby finds them and comes up with a solution that no one believes in, forcing them to come up with a better solution.

Dean and Sam will be spending some time in the slammer, and to make matters worse, one of the Winchester boys will be shot. Also, look for some body-snatching demons to terrorize a small town.

Episode 12 Spoilers:
I’ll give you an example of an episode that we are working on now - episode 12. It’s sort of a Groundhog’s Day episode, and we approached it from the point of view of how can we tell a story where one or both of the boys is stuck in the same day over and over and over again. We stared with that notion, and had conversation about which brother it should be and why and what they would learn, and then ok, how could this happen supernaturally - what creature or what situation or what strange place in the United States could possibly make this happen? There’s been a lot of talk like that in the writers room lately. I believe this is a quote from Sara or Eric.

I want to thank JP who is my spoiler go to guy. He is the one who feeds my SPN addiction ;-) Anyway, wanted to share with my fellow SPN fans, and if anyone wants spoilers for episodes 8-10 let me know.

Anyone know how the stike will affect Smallville, NCIS, The Unit, How I met Your Mother, Ghost Whisperer or CSI?

Here’s to hoping the strike is settled right and soon…
