Mum just emailed me to let me know that Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King swept the Academy Awards tonight--er, this morning, er... Well, whichever. It won all 11 of the awards it was nominated for, including "Best Picture". I wish I could have seen it, but Mum said she taped the entire show for me, so I'll be able to watch it next time

Annie Lennox sang the 'Into the West' song from Return of the King!
Ooh! Love that song, should be brilliant to hear it live. And to hear the audience reaction to it. I also can't wait to hear one of the songs from that American Civil War film..."Cold Mountain", I think it's called (the film, not the song, I think). I haven't had a chance to see the film yet, but I've heard little snipptes of the song and it sounds wonderfully haunting.
Other than the glaring "modifications" to the original work, but I suppose that's to be expected.
Well, either that or it would have been far too long. Besides, considering the questions I had from friends and family that hadn't read the books ("Who's he again?" "What's the deal with the ring, again?") it's probably a good thing they pared down the characters and the oodles of added material in the books. Not that I would have complained if the films were longer, of course. :-) Was rather surprised that they left out the Scouring of the Shire, but looking at the film as-is, the pacing probably would have seemed awkward with it in.
I missed the deletion of the "duel" between Gandalf and Saruman though, but I've heard they'll include it on the video release this coming autumn.
And by then someone should bloody well have better figured out how to make DVD players and televisions work in Hogwarts. I'll go spare if I have to live without being able to watch the complete set of Extended Editions. :-) Am already in severe "CSI" and "Spooks" withdrawal.
Actually I should nose around, see if anyone has developed anything like it yet. Might be a nice treat for my students, to be able to watch some Muggle films.
Why?
I tend to use more Muggle solutions than magical simply because it's what I think of first. If that upsets certain Witches or Wizards they can go hex themselves.
I've never really had anyone look askance at me for doing something "the Muggle way" (or not that I've noticed). Well, except for knitting--where's the fun in having a charmed set of knitting needles doing it for you? But then most people don't understand why I like to knit socks when I could just buy them in the shops.
It's more the fact that I invariably start doing something tedious and time-consuming the Muggle way, out of habit, and then when I'm nearly done I remember I could have done it in ten seconds with magic. At the very least it would save me from having hand-prints on my forehead. :-)
