Just finished watched the ER season finale that Steve sent me. It featured a porch collapse like the one that happened in Wrigleyville in June, 2003.
As soon as Morris and Ray showed up at the party I half expected that plot line to follow, the Wrigleyville apartment scene is something I'm definitely familiar with. But nothing prepared me for the scene of the porch actually collapsing. I couldn't breathe, I was literally frozen for about 15 seconds.
I went to high school with one of the victims of the real collapse. Rob Koranda, he was a year older than me. He went to Princeton, his family was the sort of golden family that everyone wished theirs could be like. It was HIS apartment. His brother John, who is my age, was at the party and the city of Chicago recently tried to sue John for jumping on the porch and 'causing the collapse'. John is counter sueing them now. The Koranda's went on 48 hours and exposed the corruption involved in the construction of the porches. The whole thing makes me ill. John was trapped under debris and couldn't move. And the city is blaming HIM?
I can't help but wonder if NBC notified the families of the victims before airing the episode. I would think/hope that that sort of thing is mandatory when a fictional show uses real life material for it's plot. I wonder if the Korandas, or any of Rob's close friends or anyone who knew people hurt or killed at that party will ever be able to watch that episode. My sister is friends with John and she was so upset that she turned it off. My dad thinks it was tasteless.
It's just so sad, the Koranda's are great people. John is someone I always thought I'd hear about after high school, he was among the best and brightest in our graduating class. I just never thought it would be for a reason like this. He's been on 48 hours and the Today show, I wish it was for something wonderful instead of something so outrageous and horrible. I wish I was still jealous of him for having a 'charmed life'. That charm disappeared in June of 2003.
I'm sort of glad they did it, but I'm not sure why... It's just too sad to think about the people who actually died there. That part was sort of glossed over on ER. Ray didn't seem to phased that 7 of his buddies were dead.... I dunno.
