I'm so impressed with my husband: after cutting out most of our old copper pipes this weekend, I actually took a shower this morning with new pipes. He's just that fantastic. The past two days, I learned how to cut pipes, both PVC and copper, then learned how to cement in new PVC pipes, and watched in awe as Scott took a blowtorch and soldered together new copper pipes.
I also took time to do the woman's work and go out into the garage to paint our new kitchen cabinets (did I mention Scott made THOSE, too?). The color is vanilla steam in semi-gloss. I'll need to do one more coat before they're finished.
I have some ideas and samples for the backsplash, but I'm still a little hung up on exactly which tile I want to use. Scott said the plumbing would be his favorite element of the remodel, because it's challenging and it's something he designed. That's the backsplash for me. I'm trying to incorporate a mosaic and use colors that fit the black counter and the red dining room without looking like a black and red backsplash.
Also, I'm now hung up on the cooktop. I originally conceptualized a flat cooktop with a glass top. It's more expensive, but since it would be the only thing on the peninsula-- sharing the dining room-- I thought it should look streamlined and be high quality. But after talking to some folks, I've learned there are a lot of people who HATE their glasstop or ceramic cooktops. (Unfortunately, we don't have gas lines in our house, so the gas cooktop is out.) Apparently people are claiming they are difficult to clean, they can scratch, they get too hot, they can scorch pots and pans...
I'm not decided yet. But if we do save some money on the cooktop by getting a coil one, I guess I'll just have to console myself with a double oven.
