just found out that a friend of mine is in the hospital. Should be out soon, but that is scary stuff.

Apparently he has B-12 anemia, caused by his vegetarian diet. He passed out while working out and has been experiencing shortness of breath and the like, but just thought it was because he has been doing so much. In reality, he just wasnt smart about his diet.

It gets worse too, apparently his trigylceride levels were off the charts and his cholesterol was all out of whack. I had no idea those sort of things were pretty commonly associated with vegetarianism... but apparently they are.

I wanted to learn more, as per usual, and I found this website http://www.acu-cell.com/veg.html which i found interesting and seemingly unbiased, although I do have to admit that it talks much more about the cons of vegetarianism then the title would suggest.

I am pretty biased against these dietary lifestyles. They certainly can be healthy, and done right, and ultimately i don't tell people not to do them. but i do agree with the end of that webpage that says that dietary choices should be made based on what your body needs and wants, and not on an agenda. I have never met a vegetarian without an agenda, and i probably have never met a vegetarian that didnt suffer to some extent from Orthorexia Nervosa. and that is what i disagree with, not what you do or do not eat, but why those choices are made. the guise of better health really bothers me.

my mom died from being forced into a vegetarian diet. Her stomach was removed due to illness, and she was no longer allowed to consume any animal products outside of eggs, which gave her fits so she never ate them. Do i blame vegetarianism for her death? no, not at all. She didnt live a healthy vegetarian lifestyle, which is certainly not only possible, but easily done. but malnutrition is a serious matter, and it has now had its roots in vegetarianism for two people in my life.

so hopefully my friend will be alright, i wish him the best of luck. hopefully the 4-6 (depending on the day, haha) other vegetarians/vegans i know and am close with are taking better care of themselves than he did.
