i absolutely cannot stand the smiths. haha. im not very familiar with his solo work, but the smiths bother me so so much, and i dont buy into the whole 'they were the most influence band of the 1980's' or 'most influencial band in the post-punk era', thats all bullshit. hahahaha, sorry, i have had to deal with so many music snobs that constantly throw the smiths to nirvana conversation in my face as if all the decadence of the 1980's that actually led to grunge rock never happened. hahahhahaha... man, i feel better now.
anyways, i actually think johnson was the most appropriate citing in your example there. dont get me wrong, i think he was great, but as far as delta blues in concerned, he was by far the most "poppy" of them all, the poster boy, and also the last major figure within the style. some would say he killed the style single handedly, and they probably wouldnt be to far off. NIN is awefully poppy sometimes as well (i wont even use with teeth as an example here as that was deliberate) but the fragile, and well as year zero were pretty much made to have several singles, and they did... and the songs that werent radio friendly were generally bad songs (for NIN, one of my favorite bands).
morrissey is notoriously similar to bowie though, especially in recording technique and producing style, but in singing as well. im not a fan of bowie either *ducks out of way of flying garbage*, and i think it is for similar reasons.
and no vocalist is anywhere equal to robert smith for conveying hoplessness and despair, no one.
I am a fairly new fan of Morrissey, and honestly did not know that he was part of The Smiths until a few years ago. I tried listening to them, but found them quite boring compared to Morrissey's solo stuff. I can't really see why they were considered so influential, either.
It's funny that you cited NIN's last 3 albums--I would actually deem Pretty Hate Machine the most pop-sounding, though obscene enough to not be radio friendly, haha.
I disagree about Morrissey and Bowie, though. Morrissey's singing style is vastly different--he tries for almost a crooner style; a lot of his big fans compare him to Sinatra. Bowie has a much more haunting voice, and almost talks his way through many songs. And as far as production/recording, no two Bowie albums are produced the same way, while Morrissey is fairly consistent.
*throws my most rotten garbage* Bot liking Bowie is unfathomable to me! Not really....he's most certainly an acquired taste. Morrissey even moreso.
I can't argue with the Robert Smith thing, though I still think Trent's lyrics convey this better than anyone else's. That could just be because he conveys my own personal issues with depression best, though.
i would be hard pressed to say that any vocalist in the history of rock and roll conveys meaning and intention through their voice and lyrics better than robert smith. his lyrics are incredibly deep and yet totally not cryptic, and he is so damned passionate.
trent is too, dont get me wrong, this is like saying that jimi is better than harrison. i mean, in my opinion jimi is better than harrison, but that still speaks volumes to how awesome harrison is.
