Low End Theory? Really? I'm surprised!

why would you be? ive listened to ATCQ for quite a few years now. there is a pretty direct lineage from miles to herbie to kool & the gang to tribe.

i happen to like low end the best, but i own all three of their big albums

im not particularly fond of their 'incredible lyricism' however, i just like their beats, and the fact that they acctually play real music on the track, write their own compositions, and q-tip is an extremely profficient musician, composer, and bass player.

their work usually falls under the umbrella of jazz actually, and this comes from the line of herbie. they arent as much of a fusion of jazz and hip hop as kool was, but they are the next step... and the last step forward in that genre. mos def and talib kewli both write in ATCQ style, and to me, sound a lot like them.

that might be why i like black star

i suppose i should add that the lyrics do matter to me. even though i dont really care about how good or bad they are (i dont think they are that good) i like the fact that they are upbeat, and all about what is good for black america, and about having a good time....

which is a major reason i find them good tunes to roll to.

but a major reason i dont like rap is because of not only terrible lyrics, but terrible lyrics about terrible content. especially terrible content in most cases, and in all cases, content i cannot relate to in the least.

not that other people cant

i just cant
