So out of curiosity, if you were going to pick a religion to practice what would it be? (assuming that practicing Buddhism is still an experiment for you).

I think it's moreso that the people who claim to practice those religions are appalling, rather than the religions themselves. I think both have the best intentions, but unfortunately the majority of people associated with religions use them as an excuse to do horrible things.

i wouldnt, haha... i guess i would practice hinduism before anything else, since there is not any specific way to practice it.

maybe chrisitanity due to the fact that i would have the best chance at finding a community i liked and agreed with, simply do to the fact that i have sat at services in over 30 churches, and know of at least 200 more within a couple dozen miles of where i live, while this is the only zen temple i have ever seen...

or maybe atheism, because, as faiths go, that one makes the most sense to me.

i can see what you are saying with the people instead of the institution. i dont think that in any situation the majority of people becomes the case. bottom line, the majority of people in the world are either too lazy or too afraid to do anything horrible. but certainly, the powerful few in every major religion has done terrible things, so what i said still stands true, dont bad mouth another set of people unless you are ready to do the same for your own.

Hmmm, maybe I'm nitpicking, and maybe I've been reading the wrong books, but Buddha was not born of a virgin (at least, I've never been taught that). There is the story of the dream of a white elephant, but it doesn't claim she was a virgin, only that the dream indicated she had conceived him that same night and that her labor was painless. Where did you learn she was supposedly a virgin?

I agree that there are many similarities, though. It's oft said that Buddhists make better Christians than most Christians do. ;) Most of the major religions have similar foundations; the golden rule being the most common.

ok not virgin like never had sex before (even though the bible doesnt claim that of mary either), merely that she did not conceive budda through intercourse. maya and her husband didnt have children for 20 years into their marriage, she had a dream about a white elephant running into her side, and 10 months later budda came out of her right hip...

this is the myth, even though there is a somewhat historical recollection of his birth where maya simply dies at his birth, actually 7 days later... funny number that 7 is
