and, why is it insightful? Canada is about the most open minded country I have ever been to, and the U.S. has a vigorous protection of free speech. Not everyone likes all the speech, that is why speech is protected in the U.S. like an endangered species.

Trying to control the media with targeted funding cuts is putting Canada on the fast track to an unfree press and propaganda.

The video might be taking it too far, but Canada is quickly following the U.S.'s lack of diversity or differing opinion. People have been protesting the regulations that allow Harper to essentially kill any art he doesn't approve of, but we never see or read about it because we have such a minority giving us our news.

Hitler was very aware of how important controlling the media was to controlling the people. That's why so much effort was put into propaganda in WWII Germany.

As we in the U.S. just nominated Obama, I doubt we are the poster country fpr lack of diversity. BTW, we are all immigrants here so diversity is more our food court than our exception. I cannot speak too much about Canada, but it sure seems free and open to all expression.

Hitler worked with the mythology of his people. Everyone has a World myth and the Germans had this feudal kingdom under siege thing as they distrusted the West and Russia. Canada is not at all like that.

I appreciate your thoughts, but circumstances in North America now are not the same as Central Europe in the 1930s. No doubt we will do really stupid and bad things, but not necessarily the same stupid and bad things. We will be imaginative.

At times I wish I was as optimistic about people as you are.

Hitler (as is my understanding) took the hardship his people faced (due to war reparations) and then turned an ethnic group into a scapegoat for everyone's problems. I see a loose parallel between that situation and what happened post 9/11.

I must say, the mythology of his people angle isn't one I've considered before.

And of course, we live in much better times than Europe during Hitler's time, but we also can be a little to assured in that fact and become oblivious to the hoodwinking thats going on around us.

One last thing (sorry, I am going on), with the diversity thing, I meant more of a viewpoint of the media. If the 5 companies that pretty much own ALL North American media don't want something put out there for the public it doesn't get out there.

And I hope Obama wins ;)

I will certainly agree that concentrated control of Media is BAD! But, it is not clear that it has caused harm. Consider how free the Internet is, so we can engage in reasoned debate. There was a mythology in Pre-war Germany (No I was not there, I read about it) of the dwarf evil doer which Hitler's evil machine redefined as the Jew and made Jews scapegoats for everything. Mein Kampf, if you can get through it without throwing up 15 times, explains Hitler's entire evil plan. Sometimes I wonder if humanity has any transcendent value when I think about what Hitler said and what he did. My dog seemingly has more humanity.
