Continuing to read the book 'terrorism and war' Zinn makes a very good point that i hadn't really thought about before, what we are doing now in the middle east is an almost exact continuation of what we were doing during the cold war except now we are using the word 'terrorism' instead of 'communism' which got trite after oh so many years of use.
My dad pointed out that this whole iraq situation very much resembles the situation in france during world war II. The nazi's marched into the country in grand parades with people CHEERING them on. And as the occupation began many different resistance groups formed, maybe even numbering near 20. All with different objectives and different opinions but all fighting the nazis. Then there's the Vichy (sp?) government, which was supposed to be an actual french government but was really a puppet government for the nazis the entire time, and most of the french resented it. Remind you of anything??? hmmmmmmmm.. let me think about that.
1 year in prison for this soldier from abu ghraib because of a deal he made.. god damn it. and the media is saying that punishing the higherups in the military for the abuses in abu ghraib will be almost impossible even if they get all the soldiers to testify against them. And then those soldiers that do may also get a 'deal' to get a lesser sentence if they testify, so in the end, the soldiers will be discharged and get one year in prison for torturing MANY people for MONTHS and probably even killing 25 or so people as a result of abuse.. the only good thing i see about this is that they may get life if they don't get a deal, punishment that fits the crime i think
