Merry Christmas, everyone! :D
Well, it's Christmas Eve here, which confusingly is Christmas Day, and you do presents after the evening meal apparently, so I think I can legitimately wish everyone Merry Christmas now. :) Mum and Eric are at church, which I declined, being the godless heathen that I am, and so I thought I might try and catch up on some LJ instead. ;)
So, lets see: should post about Den Gamml By. Which I have forgotten the spelling of, but it means The Old Town. It's all these gorgeous historic building which have been shifted from all over Denmark to the one spot, and then set up to recreate life in that time. So right now they're set up to recreate Christmas in the various eras, so it's all very lovely indeed.
All the interiors were quite dark so it was hard to take photos, but here's a few:
That's a view of some of the buildings and the partially frozen canal. Yep, I am appreciating a whole new level of cold here, while still bemoaning the lack of snow.
Here's a man playing a tune!
And the horse and carriage that almost ran me over!
More pretty buildings - I just love the housing design here. This is the sort of thing you see absolutely everywhere, not just in historical tourist recreation things.
Hat shop! :D All set up with actual historic hats. There were some gorgeous Edwardian and 1920s ones especially. Mon, you would have loved it so much! I wish I'd got more photos but it was quite crowded.
This house was set up for a Victorian Christmas:
Had lots of interesting detail for each house, and info on what the family living in it would have been like, and how their lives were depending on their income and profession. There was also people dressed up in some houses, as if they were the family there, cooking pancakes on the open fire and things like that. :)
There was also a toy museum, which delighted me. Dolls!!!
Here's a Victorian lady in an elegant cape:
And a lovely dolls house:
I took about a million more pics of them all, but will show some restraint and not post them all up!
And we stayed until it got dark and all the lamps were lit, and it was just wonderful.
What else? I spent a bit of time in Arhus and saw the Women's Museum there, which was really interesting: all about the history of women in Denmark, and the changing roles and struggles for rights. Also, they had some excellent costumes on display. Wasn't allowed to take pictures, sadly. Also went to a Viking Museum, which is located, hilariously enough, underneath a perfectly ordinary bank - I got the impression that they were excavating to build there, found a whole lot of Viking remains - as one does - and thought, what the hell, we'll just shove a museum underneath. So you can go deposit a cheque or whatever and then go admire the Viking skeleton in the basement.
No photos, because that was one of the days I apparently forgot I owned a camera entirely. Oh well. They had some cool rune stones and the above mentioned skeleton, and lots of other artefacts too - I really enjoyed it.
Annoyingly, a lot of things are closed at this time of year, so there's many a castle I would like to see that is only open up to September - but still, I did see a lot last time, and I have more limited time here now anyway. Going to Ribe after Christmas, which is a historic town that still has heaps of medieval buildings, and of course more Viking museums - hurrah! :D So, looking forwards to that.
Well, that's about all for now, will try my best to keep updating! Lets finish off with a picture of Inkling and two deer I bought in the supermarket. Why yes, I do pack dolls when I travel - never know when you might need one! :D
Edit: oh, and I forgot to mention: I SAW SOME DEER IN THE WOODS!!!! :D :D :D
You have no idea how happy this makes me. Real wild deer! :D It was amazing!
Merry Christmas to everyone, wherever you all are, hope everything is wonderful!!!!!
