Who needs a man?

So it took me a few days, a lot of starts and stops, and the boxes are still all over the place and cords are not tucked away -- but no matter, my home office workstation is hooked up, and I did it ALL by myself. I feel so triumphant. Laser printer? Prints! Wireless keyboard? I'm using it! Wireless mouse? So much better than fingering a little trackpad. And the best part? My bad-ass mutha 24" flat-screen LCD monitor. It's a world apart from my tiny 11" laptop screen. I had to install what seemed like countless drivers, and read manuals both digital and analog, and troubleshoot problems at every turn (not one item worked right away and I had to figure out why). I discovered that I bought the wrong connectors, or didn't have crucial ones, and had to traipse to the Apple Store. Where, in a bit of serendipity, the salesperson I asked for help turned out to be a long-lost cousin whom I haven't seen in years (she happened to recognize me, but I remember her as a little girl). We exchanged contact info and promised to get together. I went to the store for a computer part and came away with a family reunion.

Anyway, would it have been easier if I just asked my brother-in-law to help me set up my workstation (my usual m.o. for anything electronics-related)? Hell yes, and he would've done it in a fraction of the time. But I wouldn't have run into my cousin, for one, and I've also learned a lot.

Mini Display Port -- now I know what it does. DVI vs. VGA adapter? I know which one to go for. "Mirrored display" on or off? Off! Connecting a printer to a wireless network? I finally found a use for an old CAT-5 cable of Steven's. Primary, default settings? Gotta have those down. Updated drivers? They are your friend. And Google? That is my savior.

Now all I have to do is clean up all the cast-aside packaging and find a way to tidy up the cables. I have half a mind to get this space-saving docking station but enh, my desk is empty(ish) enough for now.

So yay! I did it! Next I'm going to try hooking up the Blu-ray player that I bought months ago (to replace the one that Actor Guy gave me/hooked up for me). I'm on a roll! Who needs a man? Not I!
