Recently I exchanged a pair of silver Tory Burch flats that my sister had given me for my birthday for a gorgeous pair of Hunter rain boots in black gloss. They're so awesome -- I almost want it to rain, although I think I might have a potential new leak in my roof (which sucks because the roof was redone just a couple years ago). Anyway, getting the Hunter boots means I can check one more item off my shoe wish list. I'm trying to do less impulse buying with shoes, and investing in just a few key pieces that, while intially seeming expensive, will be comfortable, classic and last me for years.
Like the Frye oxfords I bought last year. They weren't cheap, but they look awesome, are super comfy and very high quality. I know I can wear them for 10 years minimum. I don't know how long my bronze metallic Birkenstock Gizehs will last me, but after I got them over Memorial Day weekend last year, I wore them almost every day during the summer and walked long distances in them, and they've held up great. My Lucchese goatskin cowboy boots will last me a lifetime. I think my Hunter boots will fall in that category (especially since it doesn't rain all that much in LA). I feel like I finally can appreciate the logic behind paying a bit more upfront for quality, and not chasing trends (or at least going for classic brands that will hold up over time). I wonder if that means I'm getting old?
So, no more Target shoes, even if they're a collab with a high-end designer. They're still Target shoes that hurt my feet. Bye-bye, fast disposable fashion, and hello to stylish -- note the word STYLISH -- classics. Which means I'm not going back to the old Bass Weejuns of my college days. But my Converse Chuck Taylors? Those pass muster.
I suppose, after all my talk about decluttering and buying less this year, that all this dreaming about shoes seems contradictory. But the way I see it, I'd be better served if I pared down my shoe wardrobe and filled in gaps with long-lasting items instead of having a whole bunch of impulse pairs. Also, it's all a matter of perspective, right? Actor Guy seems to think I have too many shoes as it is. But R., upon seeing my collection, shrugged and said merely, "My best friend from college works for Vogue, so this is nothing." For once, I prefer R.'s point of view over AG's. Ha!
Anyway, just because I covet certain shoes now doesn't mean I'll actually go out and get them. Half the time I find that listing things here helps with the urge to buy, and eventually the desire for possession fades.
So what other stylish items are still on my wish list?
-Frye engineer boots
-Flat black riding boots
-Red Toms
-
Tieks ballet flats (great for travel)
-Minnetonka moccasins (can't decide between the fringe-y boots or the more sedate mocs)
Only five pairs! Not bad!
