Okay, so even though I've done 'concert reviews' in the past, I don't particularly like them since they always have that "aren't you jealous because I was there and not you?" vibe so I promise I won't got into ultra-mega-detail, but good heavens....
A thought occurred to me on the way to the Fleetcenter: Crap, I'm gonna be late! Man, I hate public transportation! Then a second thought occurred to me. I think I've logged more minutes listening to Paul McCartney than any other artist. In fact, I'm almost sure of it. All them Beatles' albums... all them Wings' tunes (including a Bond theme)... all them solo records.... ("Tug of War" featuring "Ebony And Ivory" was the second cassette I ever owned. You remember cassettes, don't you?) Heck, he even appeared on the "Thriller" album. Paul McCartney is the man and I may be the only person in the world who got into the Beatles' because of his solo stuff. It's weird that I've never seen him live before... though I have seen Beatlemania. Twice! But I suppose that doesn't count.
Do you know how long I've wanted to hold the Wings' "W" hand gesture in the air and have people not think I'm a crazy person? Paul McCartney puts on a truly amazing live show. I went to the concert expecting a nice show. Some Beatles' songs, some Wings' songs, some solo stuff.... a good, solid concert... maybe an hour and 45 minutes if we're lucky. (Paul is 60, y'know.) Lo and behold, we got a 2 1/2 hour show -- the majority of which were Beatles' tunes. He said hello with "Hello, Goodbye" and ended with "The End." You can't ask for much more than that. And I got my nuggets... "Every Night," "Let Me Roll It," "Getting Better," She's Leaving Home." Really, I could not have asked for more. (Except maybe "Say Say Say," but we didn't really think he was gonna play that one, did we.)
So what if he didn't do "Get Back." So what if I was mildly annoyed at the crowd for being disrespectful. Hello? There's a rock legend on the stage. I don't care if he's playing something "from the new album" or not. You sit there and enjoy it. So what if I was in the very last row of the balcony. (I was dead center though, so that was nice. Could I have thrown a tennis ball and hit Paul in the noggin? Probably not, BUT I think it would have gotten there on the bounce.) And so what if they sold out of the orange t-shirt and the Fleetcenter security nazi's wouldn't let me visit a different souvenir stand. I had a blast. The band he's assembled is pretty great and I'd definitely see him again. My ticket was $50 bucks and yet I still feel like I got a bargain.
