I've never been drawn to gardening. But I really, really, really enjoy home-grown vegetables.
We've managed to successfully grow some herbs on the deck, and it is truly wonderful to have fresh herbs for cooking "on tap" all the time. Everything from last summer except some of the rosemary and some of the sage (and also a strawberry that never bore fruit last summer) has died, but we want more herbs again, and I've been wanting to try some veggies. Starting with things we can grow in pots on the deck seems like a good plan; closer to the door, no planting in the ground, no building raised beds. (If the potted veggies succeed, maybe we'll graduate to raised beds next year.)
So I bought a few organic starts on Friday, and today L and I bought some more, plus some extra pots and a metric buttload of organic soil (and also an extra gnome). Tomorrow afternoon, we will be planting:
broccoli
bok choy
kale
romaine
cayenne
cherry tomatoes
rosemary
thyme
oregano
curry
spearmint
lavender
snap dragons
hedgehogs and gargoyles and gnomes, oh my (the magical support staff for the plants)
Whee!
I am trying to think of these plants as little green puppies in hopes that that will help me take better care of them.
Except I don't usually eat puppies. I knew the metaphor would break down at some point. Oh well. At least I thought to water the Friday puppies today.
