With heads bowed against the rain, Matthew and I plunged into the city to enjoy a nice dinner before the Gotye concert last night. Turns out, half of Melbourne had the same idea. We couldn't find anywhere at Fed Square that had any tables left, and with time ticking away and hungry stomachs we ended up at the place right next door to the carpark we had started from; Nandos. After Matt made a vain attempt at ridding the water cascading from his head and dotting his glasses (I had worn a coat with a hood, so had stayed relatively dry. An umbrella at a music gig is not the most practical item), we scoffed our food and stepped out onto the footpath to join our queue. Quite literally.
OMG you guys, the concert, it was...it was SO AWESOME! I video'd some on Matt's phone - because of course my battery died right near the beginning - and it just doesn't do it justice. The atmosphere, the music, the reverberating bass, the lights and the presence of awesomeness; it was brilliant.
The Forum was such a great venue for his concert and we were about the third row from the edge of the stage.
Wally was accompanied by his extensive 10-piece band, as well as a backdrop of animated eye-candy, created by a diverse range of very talented Aussie artists. It very much worked to set the ambience, and Gotye's
film clips are worth the viewage. With Gotye on vocals, a midi marimba, drums, plus his crew of 3-piece horn section, keyboards, guitar, bass, percussion, drumkit and backing vocals, you can imagine the performance was just amazing. He played tracks from his '
Making Mirrors' album (listen on SoundCloud), but graced us with my endearing favourite, Hearts A Mess from his 'Like Drawing Blood' album. Gah, I was nearly choked to tears, this song is just so wonderful and sad and painful and gorgeous. I video'd his performance of this song and it's pretty evident I was shaking. When I heard Somebody That I Used To Know first played on Triple J I thought it was my new favourite, but Hearts a Mess is still the forerunner in my opinion. They both stir up the well of emotions, but Hearts A Mess has most definitely embedded itself in me and I just never, ever get sick of hearing this song. Which is a good thing, because it's been my ringtone for years. Wally also rewarded our cheering and whistles with an encore performance of Learnalilgivinanlovin, also from the 'Like Drawing Blood' album, and even smashing out an epic drum solo. It was a pretty good high to finish the gig on.
Not bad for a mobile phone pic, huh ;)
I should probably also give a mention to the support act, local duo Oscar + Martin. I rather liked their set, which can be best described as experimental pop/indie. I especially loved their improvised drum duets, reminiscent of Taiko drumming.

Annndd, now Daylight Savings starts and I've lost an hour in the vacuum of time-space :/ I tell you, Melbourne, you might want to start acting a little more like Spring to justify losing that hour!
