Postscript to a run of marathon proportions

Jun 01, 2008 18:37

Right now, I am sore in 500 different places.

But I just have to say it. I completed my first marathon today. I've done a couple of halfs in the past, but this is my first full marathon.

Friends have asked why I would want to subject myself to the torture. I often reply that it's a personal thing, something that I don't expect everybody to understand.

I'm actually quite happy about my time. I shaved off at least 20 minutes from my best half marathon time, and completed the full marathon before the sun came up. Not competitive standard time but definitely better than I expected.

During the last 2 kilometers, the rain started to fall in torrents which slowed me down as the final leg was hilly and treacherous, particularly when the rain made the path slippery. I saw 2 runners fall on their bums so I was extra careful not to be the third. By the time I reached the finish line, I was wondering how the 84 click runners were faring, needing to finish another full stretch of the entire 42k route. I really can't see myself doing it. The divine miss m finished her 84 kilometer run after 13 hours!

All in all, it was a good run. Could have have been better but it was good. Kudos to all the volunteers who kept up with a smile and a cheer non-stop, even at 4 am and under the pouring rain!
