Fic: Dislocation

Mar 23, 2010 18:02

Writing never works like this for me. But I just sat down and wrote this after the first few lines (which are no longer the first lines) popped into my head and I had to get them down or they'd disappear. Usually it takes me days or weeks to get something resembling a story, and possibly months to get it to the point where I might post it. But this just sort of appeared. Weird.

So, BSG, post-poof, slightly angsty, no dialogue as usual because I suck at that.

As always, comments are greatly appreciated.

Dislocation

He stays in the field for three days. After one, Helo comes looking for him but Lee refuses to speak, doesn’t dare say it out loud for fear that it will make it real, permanent. He can’t handle that just yet, can’t imagine it. After two days, he’s sunburned and dehydrated but still refusing to speak, and he fights when Cottle tries to have him taken back to the med tent. They pitch the tent over him.

In the end, Lee stays. He told Kara he wanted to climb mountains, and he did. But the view just doesn’t seem worth the effort anymore. Not when she isn’t there to share it.

He tries to keep busy, tries to contribute. Gods know there’s enough to be done, everything from digging a well, to building houses, to debating whether they even need a system of government anymore. But his heart just isn’t in it. He searches himself for that passion, that drive to better himself and society and he almost laughs out loud when it finally occurs to him. His ambition disappeared along with her.

So he works. He helps fell trees and hunts and hauls water and when he can’t lift his arms anymore he watches the children so their parents can work even if he can’t. He falls asleep every night out of sheer exhaustion. But if he stops, if he lets himself rest he might dream, but as unbearable as this new life is, he's terrified of dreaming. He’s really not sure which would be worse, dreaming about her and waking up alone again, or not dreaming about her and finally facing the truth.

His Dad is out there somewhere. On his better days he believes that all the people who have left him are out there, just over the horizon, waiting for him. Zak, Mom, Dad, Laura, Dee, all the people he’s cared about, but he still can’t bring himself to even think her name.

The people around him slowly settle to their new lives, find a measure of peace at least, even if it can’t be called happiness. Lee’s still waiting to wake up.
