Bishop Robinson & The Mysterious Error

Jan 19, 2009 12:07

Yesterday, Bishop Robinson gave an invocation at the start of the inaugural concert that was held at the Lincoln Memorial. However, not only was Bishop Robinson not shown on the program (he came on minutes before the broadcast began as part of a pre-show), but there are numerous reports that huge parts of the audience couldn't hear him due to a technical malfunction.

So far only the blogs are carrying this news item (which alone is irritating, as apparently CNN feels "couch surfeng inauguration parties" are more important), so the most complete account is coming from the Huffington Post.

Gay Bishop Gene Robinson Left Out of HBO Concert Coverage

So HBO is saying that the Obama PIC told them to put Bishop Robinson in the unaired pre-show, and the Obama PIC is saying it was an "error" and they always meant for Bishop Robinson to be broadcast and heard.

I'd really like to believe that this was just a miscommunication. However, given how famously meticulous Obama's transition committee and PIC has been on everything else, I'm finding this hard to believe. Additionally, an interpretation that this was far form an innocent mistake fits a disturbing trend I've seen from the Democratic Party and Obama.

Even if it was just a mistake and nothing else, it still feels like just another slap in the face. Once again, another occasion that I should feel celebratory over has been marred because of this kind of bullshit. The very fact that I can't just pass this off as a mistake and move past it is itself an indication of the fact that, despite Obama's proclamations of how "We Are One", in reality we are not. Some of us are not as welcome in this ceremony as others, if not by the President than by the country he leads, and I find myself less inclined to take part in it.
