Iron Man 3
It had the usual plusses and minuses we get from Iron Man. The biggest problem is the total lack of continuity with the developing franchise and Tony's links to the Avengers. Tony gets mixed up in a Mandarin attack. Tony issues an huge, gigantic threat against a major terrorist. Fury should have come down on that like a ton of bricks, or been there to back him up. And when the house was attacked, SHIELD and the other Avengers should have been there. It doesn't make sense that Tony would be going up against a threat like The Mandarin alone.
If you can get past that obvious logical problem, there's a lot to like. BAMF!Tony, BAMF!Rhodey, both separated from their armor, taking on the Extremis enhanciles. I really liked Tony's interaction with the kid in Tennessee. JARVIS's big attack on AIM at the end was excellent. Even Tony's PTSD. All awesome. I was willing to forgive the fact that between Tennessee and MIAMI, Tony failed to pass by one single place he could have just bought a normal gun. He certainly has no qualms about using the ones he picks up environmentally. He couldn't drop a couple hundred on some firepower on his way to rescue Pep? Seriously?
I admit, I was disappointed Tony didn't undergo the Extremis procedure. It's a cool science fiction idea, to turn your brain into a computer, and it suits Tony. On the other hand, it keeps him more human, which is what is interesting about Tony, right? And the fact that he did the Extremis thing in the comics was kind of contrived, in my opinion.
I was also sad that the Tony and Pepper from the beginning of Avengers was not in this movie. They were so good, bringing the tower online, and there was nothing like that here.
Biggest laugh of the entire movie came in the after credits scene. STAY.
Star Trek spoilers below.
Star Trek Whateveritis (cut for one big spoiler that actually I think everybody knows already)
I'm caught up in a big Sherlock whirl right now, as I rewatched it this past week. AG33 was watching it for the first time. Having a mini-crush on both Sherlock and Watson, which is causing me to take a second look at the idea of seeing The Hobbit after all, and whoo, boy, it was bad that I noticed Mr. Cumberbatch being all evil in the Star Trek trailer. And I am TOTALLY into the idea that he is Khan. Unfortunately, the fandom atmosphere in my home is very anti-reboot and I don't think the scorn I would suffer for going to see any of the Trek reboots would be worth indulging the mini-crush. Maybe if I admitted that's why I wanted to go... Zats volunteered to come up from Florida to go see it with me. That would be a great excuse! "But she flew in from Florida!" Meanwhile, I got totally gipped, because I didn't get a Trek trailer today. *shakes fist at Marvel*
The Lone Ranger. This will be a hard sell to Husband, but seriously, it had a very Wild, Wild West vibe going. You've seen the show from the 60s, right? I loved that show (which today I thought to check and now I think I have something to go AT THE TOP of my Christmas list). The whole trailer was making me think of Artie and Jim. I bet it will be awesome.
White House Down might be worth going to see strictly for the action fic cliche lulz. I know it will be completely idiotic, but probably make me laugh my ass off and have a few cheap thrills. Maybe we can pick it up on a $8 DVD in a couple of years.
Argh. Catching Fire. Looks so boring. Apocofic is just not my brand of movie. At least, not when it's serious. Sean of the Dead was fun.
Thor and Loki were looking delicious. Couldn't tell much else about Thor 2 from the short trailer I saw, except looks like we get SIF! I LOVE SIF!!!
