CHARACTER
NAME: Jona Matsuka ジョナ・マツカ
CANON SOURCE: Toward Terra 「地球え・・・」
TIMELINE: Nebulous time period after Nazca ナズカ but before events leading directly to his death.
CANON ABILITIES: Like all Mu (ミュウ: Myuu), Jona has telekinesis, telepathy, and various psionic powers/force fields etc. He’s never had the opportunity to really explore these powers though, so his psionics are not very strong except under duress or when Keith needs him. He seems especially telepathically sensitive to those around him, hence his shaking fits.

PERSONALITY:
Weak. Monster. Liar. Soldier. Alien. Guilty. Man. Passionate. Sensitive. Lover. Strong.

Jona is a liar, born and bred. If you asked him who he is, he’d have no trouble telling all about Jona Matsuka, the poor student, the weakling, the shivering coward. It’s no trouble at all because it’s the story he wishes was true. But no matter how feeble he pretends to be, Jona has a fierce and loyal heart. He hates being talked down to, but he bears it because he loves humanity, those who raised him and those he grew up amongst.

Jona knows he is a freak, and his love for his fellow humans is severely tempered by the horrible guilt he feels at being able to read their thoughts. He knows he shouldn’t be able to, and blames himself for being unable to respect their privacy. This intense self-deprecation that he cultivates in order to blend in is greatly at odds with the passionate, sensitive Mu. He hides it as best he can, but it does cause him quite a bit of stress. He confesses to shaking fits that those around him just take as another sign of his weakness. He is often nervous, in general and of discovery.

Jona is filled with passion and with love. For the love of humanity, he cages himself. When he meets Keith Anian, who knows what he is and still allows him to live, Jona loves him too and exposes himself to Keith, not only as a Mu but also to Keith’s harsh denigration. Keith reminds him as often as possible that he is monster, a pawn, and that one day he will be disposed of. He is treated poorly, by his beloved commander and the other officers who often insinuate just what it is that he is good for and it is not strictly ‘making coffee’. Despite this, Jona remains unwavering in his devotion to Keith, who he knows to be kinder than he lets anyone see. He is used to the guilt and devotes himself to his best ability anyway.

He stands by this conviction to his death. He does not even abandon Keith when he is called out to by the other Mu. He does not kill Keith and run despite ample opportunity. While others cringe from Keith’s cold brutality, Jona stands strong. Only Keith and perhaps Serge and Tony know how strong he truly is, for everyone else: he lies and quivers.

CANON HISTORY: Jona Matsuka is a Mu, an evolved human with psionic powers. Jona Matsuka is a mutant: Jona Matsuka’s kind is hunted. From the beginning, he realizes how strange he is and goes to great lengths to hide what he is so that the all seeing Mother System will not notice him. He plays the stupid boy, the weak boy and he plays it so convincingly that even the terrifying Adulthood Exam fails to notice that he is not like the others.

From there, Jona goes through school (of which there is no mention) and then joins the military. There he languishes silently in the background, given to shaking fits out in the cold of space and mocked by his commanding officer and fellows. Then he meets Keith Anian: a Member’s Elite, a Mu hunter, and a ‘machine’. At first, Jona is frightened of the cold exterior and equally blank interior. As the commander thinks Matsuka is good for nothing else, he assigns the young Mu as Lieutenant Anian’s valet.

Alone together, Keith catches wind of his fear, and they end up in confrontation. Jona exposes himself by clearly reading Keith’s thoughts and then protecting himself from the hunter by using his psionic powers. Keith has been trained to fight the Mu though and he comes out the victor. Jona apologizes in tears and begs to be left alone, promising that he’ll never do it again and that he just wants to blend in and be left alone.

For reasons known only to Keith Anian, he does not kill the younger officer. He warns the younger man never to use his powers on him again or he will not hesitate to kill him. From then on, Keith keeps Jona at his side (keep your enemies close?), taking him along on a mission to investigate a planet around which strange phenomenon have been occurring: Mu are suspected. At this point, Jona does not really even understand that there are others like him, and considers himself a lone freak.

They are accompanied on their mission by three very young recruits who barely even have the training to complete the mission. They do not know how to land the ship, so Keith goes down to the surface alone. Keith is captured by the Mu and Jona wants to go looking for him, but the frightened recruits shoot him with a paralyzer gun and return to the ship. Upon waking, however, Jona insists that he be given a ship so that he can search for Lieutenant Anian.

This is granted to him and he returns to the planet, where the other Mu attempt to contact him upon realizing their psionic tricks do no work on him. He refuses their kinship, blocking them out and continuing his search for Keith. When Keith finally manages to mount an escape, he and Jona make contact and Jona saves him from an exploding ship using his psionic skills.

From that point on, the relationship between Keith and Jona changes, slightly. Jona is more open about his abilities with Keith, still hiding them from others, but using them without discrimination when he needs to protect his commander. He follows Anian faithfully as he ascends through the ranks, eventually becoming a senator and then acting commander-in-chief.

Keith continues to call him a monster and disparage him, but Jona often reflects that Keith is not as cold as he fronts himself to be. They argue over this point at a critical junction, and Keith orders Jona to leave. This creates an opening for a powerful young Mu named Tony to attempt an assassination. He very nearly succeeds, by Jona manages to force his way back into the room with a great burst of energy, moving between Tony and Keith, challenging Tony, who kills him. Tony, horrified to have killed a fellow Mu, flees.

Keith grieves for Jona, though he denies it, and Jona Matsuka dies knowing he was cared for.

HOW DIFFERENT DO YOU WANT THE MEMORIES TO BE FROM THEIR CANON? Fairly different, getting him to the same position in the military in the current climate is just untenable. New story: his ‘parents’ are immigrants even though he was born in the states and that’s where he gets his sense of alienation in this world, and why he joins the police force to try and prove that he loves the country he’s in.

Much like his canon though, he’ll be hiding his power, knowing he’s strange, carrying that little weight of guilt. He’ll be unaware that he’s hearing people’s thoughts or able to use his other psionic abilities and instead just ‘knows things he shouldn’t’. He'll avoid touching people as much as possible, since contact makes it worse. And who'd want to touch him anyway?

He has a very distant relationship with his ‘parents’, a symptom of his guilty conscience and also the fact that, somewhere inside, he knows they aren’t his parents. The memories’ attempts to make something familiar to him are ham-handed because he had his memories of his parents and childhood erased like all the other human children. It's a dull and dreary point for him that he talks about perfunctorily, if he has to, and avoids otherwise.

He dreams of outer space.

PLANS FOR YOUR CHARACTER: I think Jona will really love the journals. A way to talk and make friends with people without being able to ‘hear’ anything he isn’t meant to.

Jona isn’t as content with just hiding as he pretends he is, I’m certain something will come along that will force him to break out of his webbing and show the city who he really is. Really learn about himself and his powers and mankind and family and all those things he never quite gets to do.

Also, Jona is not exactly a ‘good’ cop. There is corruption in the system, and he doesn’t approve, but he’s certainly not the type to stick out his neck to try to stop it. He follows the orders he’s given, for the now. He covers up his tiny rebellions with his usual excuse of incompetence.

SAMPLES
LOG SAMPLE:
The boy’s eyes are very cold when he looks at me. Dirt on his cheeks, hands bleeding. Times are hard, it’s a mantra in the streets, a sad prayer. Times are hard. Times are hard. The boy is hungry and a thief. I’m shaking, just looking at him. He’s hungry.

He spits something at me in a thick brogue I do not need to decipher to understand. He’s angry, desperate. He seems confused as to why I’m just standing here, why I’m just staring at him.

“You have to come down to the station with me,” I tell him, mustering up as much of an authoritative tone as I can, but he shakes his head furiously, turning those cold eyes back at me.

Times are hard. He’s hungry. He breaks past me, shoves me out of the way and I don’t know if I let him or if my legs give out beneath me. He’s gone, I’ve lost him the bustle of traffic. A little thief, a hungry boy.

I rise unsteadily and make my way gloomily back to where my superior is speaking with the store clerk.

“Well?” they both wonder expectantly. It was only a child, I’m a healthy young officer. I should have been able to take care of him, no problem.

“I’m sorry, sir,” I murmur, eyes down. “I tripped in the street and he got away. I was too slow to catch him.”

JOURNAL SAMPLE: [Thin spidery handwriting, cursive, masculine, and very well formed, letters tall and thin, looping across the page in neat lines.] This is all very strange. I had thought, perhaps, this journal was a gift from my mother, but now that I look at it and see the way it moves… I’ve never seen such a thing. All these delicate lines, they’re very quiet, yet so expressive.

I am given to understand there are people on the other sides of these pages? A vast many, if I understand correctly.

My name is Jona. It is a pleasure.

NOTES: I need me a Keith. :< Someone talk Maddie into playing Keith for me.
