Edgar grinned and nodded as he knelt beside Rukia's bed. As he laid the measuring tape along the length of her body, Edgar nodded to himself and jotted down the measurement onto a small pad. Absently rubbing the between the eyes of one of the kittens, he stood and nodded to Rukia. "Thank you, M'Lady; that should be all the measurements I need from you. For now, at least."

He took one of the crutches from where it was leaning and he measured its length, whistling as he compared it to the measurement he had taken from Rukia: The crutches were very nearly 15cm too long for her. Shaking his head and muttering something about mechanical inefficiency and how it would be easier just to make crutches that were adjustable on more than one side.

Still muttering to himself, he took out a small piece of chalk and marked where he planned to make his first cut on the crutch. Before he began, he looked over at Rukia and cocked his head to one side. "You don't mind if I do this here, do you, M'Lady? I mean, I'll absolutely clean up the dust from the cutting, but if you're worried about the kittens, I can do this outside. It should only take a moment, either way."

She shrugged, staring down at the kittens that Luke had left. "I think they should be okay." She didn't know if they would or not, honestly.

Edgar nodded and took a seat near the foot of Rukia's bed. As he began to cut through the tubular metal leg of the crutch he was holding, he looked over to the dark-haired girl and offered her a mischievous smile.

"See, M'Lady?" he said as the mithril sawteeth cut through the pipe quickly, "I told you wasn't a womaniser. If I were, I certainly wouldn't have let an opportunity like the one I had just now pass me by."

She just stared at him.

"The fact that you say that only shows how much of a womanizer you are, Edgar-san."

Edgar laughed and put his hand to his heart. "M'Lady, you wound me again!" he cried, "Whatever shall I do?" he laughed again and smiled at Rukia as he resumed cutting through the crutch.

"You know," he added a moment later, still smiling, "I'm not really that bad, Rukia. Honestly."

She smirked. "I know."

Edgar laughed and winked at Rukia as he cut through the leg of the first crutch.

"Well, I'm glad for that, M'Lady," he said, sounding pleased, "I'd hate for you to think I were some sort of emotionally hollow cad. I far prefer to be thought of as roguishly charming."

A few moments later, he grinned as the second leg dropped and made a hollow clatter against the leg of Rukia's bed. Edgar retrieved the rubber - at least he assumed it was rubber - feet from the cut pipes and fitted them onto the newly re-sized crutches. Standing, he moved beside Rukia's bed and offered his hand to her.

"Did you want to try them out, M'Lady?"

She frowned and sighed as she tried to think of a way to get up without his help but with the kittens there... she was unable. Reaching out she took his hand. She didn't think he was a hollow cad, whatever that word really meant... she just thought he was too forward. He reminded her of Captain Kyoraku. Which was... both a little endearing and a little bothersome. "Help me up. I don't want to hurt the kittens."

Edgar leaned the crutches against the foot of Rukia's bed and took her hand in his. Helping her to her feet, Edgar steadied Rukia with one hand as he reached for the crutches with the other. He placed the first one under her arm and handed her the second as he took a tentative step backwards.

"How's that? Are they long enough, M'Lady?"

She nodded as she balanced herself on them, grasping the handles with either hand. "I think so." She tried to take a step forward but she wasn't used to these and so she ended up falling forward with a squeak. After crashing into the ground and the painful feeling of the crutches smacking her she sighed and looked up at him. "I guess I just have to get used to them. I'm not supposed to walk for another day or so, though. It will just have to wait."

Edgar lunged for Rukia as she fell, his hands missing her by a hairs breadth. As she looked up at him, he knelt beside her, his face a mask of worry.

"Are you alright, M'Lady? Here... Let me help you up."

"I'm fine." She insisted and attempted to push herself up only to fall again.

Edgar shook his head and put his arms beneath Rukia's body, lifting her off of the ground and laying her gently onto the bed in a single fluid motion. As he set her down, he flinched at a twinge of pain in his shoulder blade and smiled apologetically at her.

"I'm sorry for doing that without asking first, M'Lady, but I thought that it was a situation where forgiveness would be more likely to get than permission."

She frowned and crossed her arms. "You think you're so smart." After a moment she looked at him with a bit of concern. "You made a face. Did it hurt?"

Edgar shook his head and did his best to smile nonchalantly. He could feel something trickle down his back and did his best to ignore it as he spoke to Rukia.

"I'm fine, M'Lady. I just had a bit of an accident with some machinery a few days ago. My shoulder is just tender is all. Nothing to be concerned about."

She frowned and reached down to scoop up the kittens, pulling open her nightstand drawer which had a bunch of scarves and handkerchiefs and socks in it and she placed them inside before turning to look at him, her lips flattening in a disapproving line. She reached out and grasped him by the arm before tugging lightly, she was stronger than she looked, and pulling him to sit down next to her on the bed. "Which shoulder?"
