Gray wasn't much behind Sasuke in terms of arrival time. He headed toward the athletics building, hands stuffed in the pockets of his pants. For once he was actually coming with a shirt on. It wouldn't last long, but at least Gray hadn't unconsciously pulled it off before the fight even began. When he reached the location of the fight Gray threw away all thoughts of how much this was going to weaken him. Let the island do it's worst. He could handle it.

The fairy tail mage grinned when he spotted Sasuke. "Hey. You ready for this?" It had been quite awhile since Gray had a chance for a fight, the last one had just involved snowballs, and he was looking forward to it.

He let his arms drop slowly when he heard footsteps approaching, returning that grin with a smirk of his own.

"I was about to ask you the same thing..." With any luck they wouldn't attract too much of a crowd, not interested in becoming a spectacle. Still... this should be worth it.

"Don't hold back. I want to see what you can do."

Gray lifted his hands out to the sides in a emphasized shrug. "Unfortunately I have to hold back a decent amount or I'll end up flat on my back without you even doing anything. This place isn't super friendly to what I can do." Gray grinned though. "I'll manage. Just understand that if I say that's enough it's not because I'm admitting defeat it's because this place has brought me down to a level I can't handle." If he could still stand well enough Gray wouldn't mind continuing with just fists either.

"Ah. I've noticed the same thing with my abilities." Sasuke was never one to take an unfair advantage and in his opinion he didn't have much of one. This place had certainly affected him as well. Still...

"Come at me when you're ready, if you think you need the handicap of the first strike." To that he smirked again, waiting. Arrogance was in his blood, after all.

Gray's grin only widened. "Handicap my foot." He snapped his hands together, one fist held over an open palm. "Let's see what you can do! Ice make, arrows!" The ice formed into a bow in his hands. He pulled one hand back as if drawing the bowstring, and about 8 ice arrows shot from the bow. "We'll start off easy!"

His eyes widened when that bow suddenly materialized in front of the other, his muscles tense in anticipation. At the last moment he dodged, diving to the side and rolling forward to ensure that none of those arrows would hit their target. His hands flew through familiar seals as he came out of that roll into a simple crouch, breathing in deeply.

"Katon, Goukakyuu no Jutsu!" Sasuke expelled the air he'd drawn into his lungs, shooting an impressively sized ball of fire towards Gray.

Gray stared in stunned shock as that fire raced toward him. So much for a fist fight. He dove to the side, hands landing on the ground and spinning him sideways. Of all the types of people Sasuke could be, he just had to be similar to Natsu. Gray smirked. "Fire huh? This'll be good!" He yanked his shirt off, tossing it to the side, before lurching to his feet and using more magic. "Ice hammer!" The colossal hammer appeared in Gray's hands as he bounded toward Sasuke, intending on hitting him down.

If Sasuke was bothered that his katon had been ineffective it didn't show; the speed at which that fire traveled was unimpressive, especially when compared to his own abilities. Speaking of speed... He waited for Gray to get closer, taking the time to catch his breath -- this island messed with him more than he cared to admit -- before seemingly vanishing from sight altogether. He reappeared a mere second later behind Gray, a windmill kick directed at his side.

This person reminded him of Naruto, talking so much in the middle of a fight.

Sasuke's sudden disappearance threw Gray off for a moment. It was only a moment though. Knowing that his opponent was no longer in front of him, Gray spun around, the hammer swinging in a half circle to cover the area that had been behind him. Unfortunately a blind swing wasn't likely to hit anything. While it didn't meet its target, the move did allow Gray to glimpse Sasuke coming.

He managed to get the hammer's handle up before Sasuke's kick connected. The force of the kick was still strong enough to send Gray tumbling a bit. Hammer gone, Gray hissed in pain and shook his hand. Perhaps this wouldn't be as easy as he'd thought.

The fact that he was able to react fast enough to block the kick in the first place was a true surprise, one that initially annoyed him a little bit but as he jumped backward he couldn't help letting a small smirk spread across his features.

"Not bad... You actually spotted me. Luck, or talent?" Sasuke took a few steps back, increasing the distance between them as he watched and waited. "We'll see..." His brow furrowed minutely and almost imperceptibly, evidence of discomfort before those dark eyes of his lightened to red. If there were any tricks behind the other's techniques, he'd spot them.

"What do you think?" Gray asked, the smirk returning to his face. He would have loved to say that it was talent, but in all honesty it was mostly luck. He'd learned that the best reaction for when someone disappeared right in front of you was to aim for what was behind you. That might have been talent, but actually blocking the kick while doing that was totally luck. Not that Gray would admit it.

Gray pushed himself to one knee, still looking like he was recovering from the hit. Instead of getting up though, he pressed his hands against the ground. "Ice make, geyser!" Ice snapped along the ground and then erupted up in a geyser like form where Sasuke was standing.

Again he couldn't help drawing connections between this stranger and Naruto, which was probably why he was so caught off guard by the simple feint the other pulled on him. How frustrating...

"Tch..." He leaped backwards, concentrating chakra into his feet in order to force himself to move more quickly. The sharingan swirling in his eyes certainly helped, allowing him to see the energy rushing towards him before it got too close.

"Too slow!" Sasuke slipped his fingers into his kunai pouch, withdrawing both a spool of wire and several of those weighted knives. In moments he had attached them together, flinging the knives with deadly accuracy and using the wires to direct them even more precisely. A useful technique, but one that left him open while he stayed grounded.

Gray realized that dodging would be a lot simpler than throwing up a shield, but then he wouldn't get any further than he already was. Dodging was out then. He couldn't keep flinging around magic if it didn't move him forward in the first. Extra exhaustion wouldn't do anything to make him feel better either.

Gray worked out a quick modification to his shield and put it into play. "Ice make, shield." He pressed one hand on the ground and held the other out in front of him. The shield half sprang up first, rising like a wall from the ground, the edges ending like a flower. The alteration moved second. The ice rushed along the ground toward Sasuke, intent on freezing his legs in place.

Controlling the kunai was already enough strain on his sharingan, eyes narrowed in concentration as he sent chakra through the wires to keep them elevated and moving. Add in the shield that suddenly rose up out of the ground and it was no wonder that he missed the ice coming towards him through a brief oversight.

When he did see it it was too late, trying to move backward again as those kunai thudded within the ice wall... but now he wasn't fast enough. His legs were locked in place as that cold crept up them, eyes wide. "Shit!" Sasuke let go of those wires altogether, forming a seal with his hand as he tried to force more energy to his feet to break that ice.

Gray dropped his own shield, wobbling when he did. The magic penalties of the island were catching up to him. He was tired, far more than he should be. From here on out he was going to have to muscle his way through. Hopefully he could make it.

Gray slowly rose to his feet and pressed his hands together one more time. Hopefully he could call up enough energy to make a new attack even with the old one still going. "Ice make, lance." He thrust both hands toward Sasuke, the ice lance shooting from them. It was a lot smaller than it usually was and quite a bit more fragile as well.

Again his concentration was broken, the boy realizing that he wasn't going to break that icy grip on himself quickly enough. He brought both arms up, allowing them to take the brunt of that attack. Damn...

The ice pierced his skin and he grit his teeth from a mixture of pain and irritation, his right arm coming up to snap off the end of the lance. Only then did he grip the shard that remained, jutting out from the slowly reddening bandages that covered his left forearm. It may have been brittle but it was sharp... leaving it to melt was probably a better idea.

"You're not just some regular guy..." Sasuke allowed the sharingan to fade from his eyes, his head beginning to throb thanks to the limit this place assigned to him. He focused that energy instead to his feet again, able to snap the ice from at least one of them for now.

Another kunai was suddenly sent flying towards Gray as Sasuke attempted to buy himself a little more time.
