It was entirely too early for someone to be knocking on his door. Granted, Kaito was a light sleeper, and he knew how to function on very little sleep. But he still didn't appreciate early morning visitors in his dorm room.

Especially when they happened to show up without calling first.

The magician's morning was further ruined when he opened the door to find one smug, blond and British detective standing there with a confident smirk decorating his features. What the heck was Hakuba up to now?

"What?" he asked flatly.

A haughty chuckle as the magician's annoyed and unaware head appeared from behind the door. "Kuroba-kun, I have one thing to ask of you." The corners of the detective's mouth were upturned as he paused before he voiced the final question.

"... Are you the Kaitou Kid?"

... where the heck had that question come from?

Kaito gave the detective a flat, deadpan glare. "You idiot," he grumbled groggily, "How many times do I have to tell you--"

He stopped short. The word that was on the tip of his tongue was definitely not the answer he wanted to give. Why the heck would he say 'yes' to a question like that, especially one asked by Hakuba? That would just be giving everything away! Hadn't he tried so very hard to make sure the blond detective didn't figure out who he was?

He tried to say no again, but for some reason, he couldn't. What the heck was going on?

"Why are you asking a stupid question like that?" he magician grumbled as he purposely avoided answering the question. He'd have to figure out why he couldn't answer with a no before he even tried to address it.

Saguru could see the struggle on the brown-haired teen's lips. You really cannot lie. Heh.

Ignoring Kaito's question, opting to press forward, the detective rephrased, "Who is the Kaitou Kid, Kuroba-kun?"

This wasn't going to be easy.

Kaito's poker face had slammed down at this point, expression blank and unreadable despite the internal struggle. If he couldn't say no... did that mean he couldn't lie?

It was ridiculous. Kaito's life was built off of lies. He was a magician, an expert in the art of deception. He did nothing but lie. What was left of him if Ichihara-san had taken away that one, defining trait?

He leaned against the doorframe casually, arms crossed over his chest, mind racing. How could he get around this one...

"A phantom," he stated firmly. It was the truth, after all. And it answered Hakuba's question.

Saguru's eyes narrowed just perceptibly. This was becoming a horribly twisted game of 20 Questions. Not as easy as he thought ... as usual. By now, there was no way Kuroba had not noticed the ploy he was using. Kuroba was quick.

Time to try again, Kid. "Who is the person that stole the Esaki Crystal on the 23rd of May?"

Just as he asked that he saw the loophole -

A really easy loophole, too. Kaito's expression twisted into an amused grin. He spoke casually, as if he was just a regular citizen holding a normal conversation with a friend.

"Wasn't that Kaitou Kid? I think I remember reading about it in the papers!"

Tch! He had been thinking too narrowly. Saguru didn't like the taunt in the magician's face and words. He hoped to be rid of it soon.

"Civilian identity, Kuroba," the British detective corrected.

Kaito tapped his cheek thoughtfully with his index finger. "A Japanese male?" Once again, it was the truth, though he phrased it as if he was uncertain about his answer.

Such a game. "Identity meaning something that one can be identified by. Like a name. What is the name of Kid's civilian identity?"

Saguru was going to be deathly patient with this. Never again would he get such an opportunity.

Kaito shook his head, tousled locks bouncing as he did so. "If he's a Japanese male, it's gotta be a guy's name."

Tell the truth, as vague as possible. Dodge his questions. It was the only way he was going to get out this encounter with his mask in place. Suspicious... maybe. But with his identity in tact.

Saguru frowned, thinking. Somehow Kuroba was continuously successful at skirting all his questions. Hmm, what about this? Saguru gave a tight smile.

"Do you even know what the Kid's civilian identity is?"

Kaito grinned widely and winked at Hakuba. Teasing, condescending, smug and filled with mischief.

"That's a secret."

Saguru's lips were a thin straight line.

"Correct me if I'm wrong: you know the name of KID's civilian identity."

Why was there no gap in Kuroba's defence? This was ridiculous.

OKAY try this one XD aceupthesleeve December 1 2009, 22:28:10 UTC
Kaito yawned lazily. He looked completely unworried at this point.

"Secret," he responded again as he pushed away from the doorframe. "Are you done? I want to shower and get some breakfast before class."

((lmao, sorry, I didn't even think of Kaito's dad when I wrote this XD For the record, every question he can't dodge he's just gonna answer with 'it's a secret.' :P WHICH IS A TRUTH however suspicious it makes him look))
