china, 2006

last year, my uncle took me on a spontaneous road trip to visit the country-side where he spent his youth during the chinese culture-revolution. it was one of the most desolate site i've ever visited. it reminded a bit of few places in sayulita, mexico, except no tourists would ever come here and enjoy the sun(http://mtyy.livejournal.com/65422.html) the few local residence lived in such poverty. i saw no signs of technology. i asked my uncle how he spent time here in the past, with out television or radio. he laughed at my stupid question.... he said "TV? ha! there weren't even any lamps!" he told me he spent lot of time at the pond, which has now turned dry and into a dump. i was so captivated by the decay and i wanted to photograph everything. but due to the lack of visitors to this place, the locals were really on their toes about their places being photographed, and my uncle kept telling me not to take photos. i felt so privledged and underprivileged at the same time to have visited this place. when i was younger, my mom took me to where she spent her youth during the culture revolution, but i was too young to appreciate and understand, and i only remember how smelly those places were, and how much disbelief i had in finding out that my mom used to live in a farm...
