Author's Note: Written for comment_fic's Any, any, What if I had never let you go? // Would you still be the man I used to know? Written as a cut scene from the Nagasaki arc. Mild Muraki/Hisoka.

Hisoka tried for the hundredth time to pull free of the bindings holding him to the bed. The cord looked hardly wider than a strand of bell wire, but it clearly had to have some kind of supernatural properties, if it could keep him from phasing into spirit form and leaving.

"Still trying to escape?" his captor asked, amusement mingling with his usual elegant sarcasm. "I would think that, by now and after that first time that we met, you would be developing a certain amount of Stockholm Syndrome."

"You've never kept me this long," Hisoka muttered.

"Mmm, no, but I should have, that first time," Muraki said, stepping into his range of sight. "You were such a beautiful creature, even back then. I could have trained you to be more effective bait for this tender trap."

Hisoka turned his face away. "Stop it!"

Muraki persisted, moving so that he kept in sight. "Methinks you doth persist too much. By now, you would be an expert at seduction: we could do this as partners and I would not have had to use force to bring you here.

He reached in to run his fingertips along Hisoka's jaw. "By now, you would know how to use that haunting beauty of yours to tempt the object of my desires. You would understand just why I want -- no, rather, why I need him as deeply as I do."

Hisoka pulled his head away. "Like I'd help you? try again."

Muraki chuckled, laying a hand on the mattress beside Hisoka's head and leaning in, looking him in the eye. "You would: you would be a different person by now: you would be my creation, your mind and psyche rebuilt completely. I might even be inclined to share my tender prey with you, tasting him from the front, while you taste him from behind."

"I'd never let you lay a hand on him, no matter the circumstances," Hisoka snarled.

"Mmm, yes, the you that is now, is saying this, but the you that you might have become would likely say otherwise. I really am too clement: I should have kept you that night when we first met."

Hisoka closed his eyes, shutting out his tormentor's face; but that did not stop the flow of images and possibilities: Had Muraki kept him, he would have continued to suffer at the hands of this monster, but in time, he would have given way and possibly joined him, a jackal to his lion, helping to corner and close on his prey, while feeding on the scraps in exchange. He might have escaped a life of discrimination and distrust, but at what price? The price of being a plaything to this mad child in an adult's body.
