She worried for her twin brother, younger than she by a half hour: he had suffered so much at the hands of the village children, what would the world beyond the rice fields do to him? Would he survive? Would he prosper? Would they make it, fulfilling their dream? Dancing in these new motion pictures that had come into popularity -- would they both survive?
She had to look at this pragmatically, to make sure they had a nestegg to rely on, to look out for her innocent, trusting brother.
Then she heard the family farm had burned, taking all...
