Wakaba's family had a good life, running a western-style pastry shop in Tokyo, her mother teaching her the recipes she had learned when she lived abroad in a faraway place called Paris. Father had thought this absurd, then he saw how it caught on, the money Mother earned, the inheritance that Wakaba would have as an adult.
Till the war in the Pacific, when the Emperor declared many western things unpatriotic. Father had defended the shop then, till they had to close from a shortage of sugar and flour.
Then came the firebombs that claimed the shop and their lives....
