[Gormenghast] fics20in20 Round 3 Entry: "Down" (PG-13-ish)

Jul 12, 2011 19:20

Author's Note: Again, a fics20in20 fic, this time from their ten Themes. For some reason, the themes for this month's round eeriely fit Gormenghast very well. I might just be a bit guilty of mainlining the books lately, due to this year marking the centennial of the author's birth. Steerpike-Titus hate-shipping in order.

Word Count: 140

For once, Steerpike was the one looking down on something, just as he had started his career by climbing to the rooftop of the castle and pausing to look down on the sprawling structure below him. Now he was the one looking down, this time on the young lord of that same castle, a youth who seemed bent on throwing away his birthright for nothing. For freedom. What was that? A mere word.

Some day soon, he would be looking down even farther on the annoying whelp. Their places in the castle would be reversed, with himself as the master of the domain and the useless upstart toiling as a low kitchen rat, if the pup wasn't in his grave. The latter would be more final, but the former would satisfy better: it would leave him alive for further bedeviling...
