Twins: Mineko had suspected she carried twins, but never expected a girl and a boy. The girl had emerged quickly, to the midwife's delight and her relief. But the boy had taken longer, as if reluctant to emerge into the February chill. A harbinger that he would prove lazy and shiftless?
But she could not help but feel a prickle of foreboding: the boy's eyes would not darken by much, turning the color of sunset clouds. The color of the eyes of the stranger who'd visited her in a dream, the night before Takashi returned home from the market town...
