[Yami no Matsuei] "Furry Friend Under the Covers" (PG)

Author's Note: Written for Any, any, falling apart teddy bear. Unrequited Tsuzuki/Hisoka, plus a possible astral projection!Muraki/Tsuzuki, and I went for a broad interpretation of "falling apart".

Tsuzuki had found the teddy bear in a jumble shop in the mortal world, following a particularly bad argument with Hisoka: Much as the younger shinigami was willing to be Tsuzuki's partner and emotional anchor, there were directions that he did not want to travel in, no matter how much he cared for Tsuzuki as a friend. But it pained Tsuzuki to find that Hisoka had been seeing Tatsumi. It cut like a knife in the ribs, when all he wanted was a love to keep him from falling into the shadows that lurked in the corners of his soul, the dark clouds that tended to gather and send him scurrying for shelter, even in places where he knew he shouldn't go.

It was a old teddy bear, much-loved and much-cuddled with, the blonde fur worn but the seams still fairly strong, clearly mended by someone who had cared for the little fuzzball. But what drew Tsuzuki to it, were the bear's large green eyes, so like Hisoka's, gazing at him as if to reassure him, even though it seemed just as likely to grumble amiably at his foolishness.

And while he couldn't cuddle with Hisoka at night, he could at least cuddle with the bear.

Just as he did this lonely, windswept night, a cold autumn rain lashing at his window panes as he lay curled up in bed, the bear clasped to his chest. Earlier that evening, as he'd left the office, he'd spotted Hisoka leaving with Tatsumi, the taller man's arm around the smaller man's slender shoulders. That should have been his arm, and he'd left in even more of a hurry to hide the tears that started from his eyes. The same hot, bitter tears that fell from his eyes, dampening the bear's fur.

"It's all right, it'll pass, like the rain," he murmured, but he knew that wouldn't be till the wee hours of the morning, and then he'd be late for work yet again, where he'd get yet another scolding from Tatsumi.

He finally slid into a doze, his arms sliding free of the bear. And in that doz, something pale, a porcelain doll tucked under one arm, seemed to approach, setting it's own childhood companion aside to relieve his arms of the bear and take it's place...
