Dusty and the Fawn

Jun 22, 2008 21:25

Yesterday morning we (dusty & I) were hiking on the rendezvous trails. It's only been a couple of weeks since the snow's melted, and now it's not even too muddy anymore.
We were well in, about 1.5 miles or so when a doe (a deer, a female deer) ran across the trail into the woods. Kind of hopped across actually, boing boing. I paused, and tried to distract dusty because these creatures are rarely alone.
Then the fawn appeared. It was so small, it was about the size of dusty. (Dusty is a 40 lb borde collie/lab mix) There was no distracting the dog now. She was off like a shot. The fawn didn't go in the direction its mother had gone, but was looking around and heading down the trail. As dusty approached, the fawn crouched down. Dusty crouched as well and kind of danced back and forth, she leant in and was nose to nose with the little fawn.
All I could think of was Bambi and Thumper and Flower...
I called dusty back to me and she came right away. We held back and played ball in the opposite direction from the animals for a few minutes to give them a chance to clear off. Then we went on our way.
Sometimes I love living here.
I told this story to my mom when I spoke to her today and she was truly delighted by it.
