The Dark Knight

I really loved Batman Begins and how they turned a floundering franchise into an enjoyable and dark flick; the way Batman was supposed to be. I was lucky enough to be invited to a special screening earlier this afternoon for The Dark Knight and though I left somewhat unimpressed (because i made the mistake of expecting so much more) with everything outside of Ledger's Joker, I felt the movie did the comic book some further justice.

Without going into detail, Ledger's performance was impeccable. Scary even. Everytime the Joker was on-screen, i kept saying "oh shit" over and over again in my head. His Joker was everything DC Comics had hoped for in the Joker and more. Not sure if anyone else followed the Batman comics, but when Frank Miller wrote the 4-issue series of the Dark Knight in the late 80's, it painted a really dark side of Gotham City and it's characters. Alan Moore continued with Miller's depiction of Gotham City with a darker depiction of the Joker in "Batman: The Killing Joke" where the Joker was a complete dark menace; a far stretch from the early images of the Joker.

You couldn't help but feel sad for the world losing Ledger at such an early age. If his rendition of the Joker was any indication of his reach as an actor, we have truly lost one of today's greatest stars. The greatest portrayal of a villain on screen will keep his legacy alive.
