Proctoring Ruminations

I am currently in Cedar Park, north of Austin, proctoring a mock SAT exam for Revolution. It's actually a great gig - good money, easy to do, the only problem is it lasts like 4 hours and I have to sit here doing nothing while keeping time for the test-takers. Luckily the location I'm at has wi-fi, which is a godsend. If it didn't I'd be reading a book on my Nook or something (which isn't a bad idea either).

I took on a third film class, this one at the elementary school level, teaching film to 4th graders. It's a serious flashback to my days at Olympic camps, and I'm really appreciative of the fact that these kids, unlike my middle schoolers, have zero angst. It's not in their systems yet, which is so awesome. My middle schoolers are great because you can get real with them, you can treat them like adults. But they're so effing miserable all the time. And it's not their fault at all, it's middle school, it's designed to be miserable. Everyone is miserable at that age. It's existential. The counter to that is that my elementary schoolers aren't going to make hard hitting real pieces. They're going to be sillier. Which is okay, but less artistically satisfying for me.

In addition I agreed to teach a weeklong film class for Spring Break. That's really exciting because it'll be an all day thing, so a lot more intensity and focus and people who will want to be there. And it's money while my class is out.

With the new classes, the proctoring and such, and Hannah's raise and promotion at work we've done a really good job of increasing our income over the last few months. That'll go a long way towards our financial goals. Hopefully we can continue meeting our goals over the next year.
